**About The Opportunity**:
Working as an integral part of the Ta na wa Yúus ta Stitúyntsam̓ (Rights and Title Department) and the Natural Resources branch, the Fish Enumerator is a Full-Time Term position working from July to February. Staff will enumerate (count) adult salmon in the Squamish Valley watershed during the freshwater stage of their life cycle. The primary function of this role is to record data on salmon species composition and abundance in the various tributaries, streams, and side channels of the Squamish Valley area. Fish Enumerators travel to designated rivers by 4x4 vehicle, and survey using hip waders and safety equipment. Work is conducted throughout all types of weather. Data are recorded in the field, transcribed onto data sheets in the office, and are sent to the Natural Resources Manager, biologist consultants, and Department of Fisheries and Oceans on a weekly basis. DNA samples are collected and preserved as well. Data logbooks must be meticulously maintained, including details regarding daily environmental conditions, along with all additional salmon enumeration data. Fish Enumerators require strong knowledge of salmon lifecycles, salmon run timing, and must understand how changing environmental conditions and climate change can impact salmon populations and run timing. Enumerators are also responsible for reporting salmon-related concerns (barriers to fish passage, fish stranding, dumping, pollution, erosion, etc) to the Natural Resources Specialist. Fish Enumerators must adhere to workplace health and safety policies, field work procedures, and must maintain active certifications in First Aid, Swiftwater Rescue Technician Training, Resource Road Drivers Training, Environmental Field Monitoring, and any additional training deemed required.
**What You Bring**:
- Combination of education and experience.
- Strong knowledge of Squamish Nation territory, and Squamish Nation environmental and cultural values.
- Knowledge of salmon species identification, salmon life cycles, salmon run timing, and how environmental conditions and climate change impact the success of salmon reproduction and survival.
- Professional, adaptable communication style with strong interpersonal skills.
- High level of emotional intelligence, patience, and positivity.
- Works well in a team-oriented environment and independently under mínimal daily supervision.
- Flexible attitude with an ability to anticipate and plan how daily and weekly schedules must be organized.
- Proactive in anticipating the needs of others and identifying solutions.
- Resourceful, organized, and detail oriented with excellent time management abilities.
- Operates at a high level of people interaction with courtesy, tact, and diplomacy.
- Must be physically fit; able to walk up to 10 km per day on forest trails, and able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
***Salary**: $ 22.51 - $ 24.70 per hour, plus a comprehensive benefits program.
