Emergency preparedness is a critical aspect of CCH operations. It is essential that all staff and physicians receive training and understand their roles and responsibilities in this field.

**Summary of responsibilities**:
Reporting to the Manager of Perioperative Services, the Anesthesia Assistant performs within the scope of practice established by the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario and the Regulated Health professions Act, Province of Ontario, as well as embody a culture of caregiver inclusion in the patient’s plan of care.

As an integral member of the perioperative team the Anesthesia Assistant (AA) participates in the care of the patient during general, regional or local anesthesia. The Anesthesia Assistant is a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) specially trained to provide anesthesia care to stable surgical patients under supervision and immediate availability of an anesthesiologist. The role is an expanded role of the RRT and requires completion of a post graduate (diploma) anesthesia assistant training program. In addition to providing technical support to the anesthesiologist for complex anesthesia equipment, the anesthesia assistant administers anesthetic gases and medications, performs activities such as the provision of conscious sedation, and is responsible for the insertion and management of intravenous and arterial lines. The AA provides constant assessment and evaluative monitoring of the depth of anesthesia using medical directives and order sets, as applicable. An AA’s skills are required primarily within the pre operative, surgical suite, and post operative care areas, but also within clinical diagnostic areas where procedures using anesthesia are conducted. The AA is an integral member of the allied health team to which there are accountabilities for professional practice, education and research.

**Requirements of the job**:

- Diploma from an accredited Respiratory Therapy Program
- Graduated from a post graduate Anesthesia Assistant course
- Holds current Certificate of Registration from the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario, without limitations
- Holds current certification in BCLS, ACLS, and NRP
- Knowledge of anesthesia technologies, basic hemodynamic principled, and general knowledge of anesthesia equipment.
- Sound Judgement and problem - solving abilities.
- Knowledge of the Regulated Health Professions Act and other related professional acts
- Knowledge of hospital /OR processes, policies and procedures
- Maintains and enhances knowledge through attendance and participation at continuing education programs, seminars or other related activities
- Demonstrated recent experience relevant to the area of practice
- Demonstrated capability of making critical decisions, with or without the collaboration of an anesthesiologist and function with confidence in emergencies
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to work well with multiple interruptions.
- Must be able to multi-task in a fast-paced work environment
- Ability to work independently and within a multi-disciplinary team environment
- Ability to respect and maintain confidentiality
- Demonstrated effective communication skills, critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, and organizational skills
- Ability to meet physical demands of position including lifting over 60 lbs. and withstand constant standing and/or walking

- Knowledge and expertise that pertains to respiratory care to provide quality client care

Preferred Qualifications:

- Membership in the Respiratory Therapy Society of Ontario
- Membership with the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society (CAS) Anesthesia Assistant subcommittee
- Member with the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapist AA subcommittee (CSRT)
- Two (2) years of multi-service operating room experience with the last two (2) years in the role of anesthesia assistant.
- Functional level in both official languages (oral and written in English; oral in French - and testing completed)
