The Manitoba Geological Survey, Resource Development Division facilitates sustainable development of the province’s mineral, petroleum and pore-space resources. The Geological Survey Branch conducts a wide range of investigations, which include the examination of exposed bedrock, subsurface materials, and surficial sediments including sand, gravel and organic deposits throughout Manitoba. The branch provides data and products, such as geological maps and reports, metallic and industrial mineral deposit reports and databases, mineral resource assessments, targeted geoscience research, development of exploration models, and maintenance of data inventories. By developing an understanding of Manitoba's geology and geological processes, the Geological Survey Branch promotes mineral exploration opportunities and contributes to wise land-use management.

Conditions of Employment:

- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Able to conduct lab and field work that requires significant physical effort (heavy lifting, standing for long periods of time, walking long distances) and in varying weather and terrain conditions
- Able to visually identify colours of rocks in hand sample and thin section.
- Able to travel domestically and internationally with overnight stays of various lengths, as required
- Must have a valid Manitoba class 5F driver’s licence

Qualifications:
**Essential**:

- Undergraduate degree in geology (B.Sc.) and a post-graduate degree (M.Sc. or PhD.) in geology with a specialization in sedimentary geology or stratigraphy preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Experience working in the petroleum/pore-space commodities and sedimentary geology of Phanerozoic horizons within the Williston Basin (Manitoba area preferred), including knowledge of its stratigraphic framework, overall geology and geological history.
- Experience logging sedimentary drill core, and correlating, reading and interpreting geophysical wireline logs, and doing field investigations/mapping.
- Strong oral communication skills, and comfortable presenting technical information to diverse audiences, including the general public.
- Strong written communication skills with the ability to present ideas and information clearly and concisely in reports, publications and general communications to diverse audiences.
- Effective organizational skills and ability to independently prioritize work to meet multiple deadlines and priorities while maintaining good attention to detail
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work efficiently with the public and staff.
- Experience in working in the sedimentary geology and/or stratigraphy of the Hudson Bay Basin.

**Duties**:
The Stratigrapher and Sedimentary Geologist is a highly specialized professional geoscience position that is responsible for the sedimentary geology, stratigraphy and pore-space commodities (including oil and gas) of Manitoba’s Phanerozoic rocks (excluding Quaternary-aged sediments). This position is responsible for the subsurface and outcrop stratigraphic mapping, detailed pore-space/petroleum studies, stratigraphic database, as well as laboratory studies, office compilation and preparation of comprehensive geological reports and maps. This position is responsible to maintain a detailed stratigraphic database to provide optimum Phanerozoic-aged resource utilization, including petroleum and pore space resources, and provide advice on issues related to land use in areas with Phanerozoic-aged rocks. The position works closely and collaboratively with staff, jurisdictional geological surveys, industry, academia and communities, to advance geoscience knowledge, as well as inform decision-makers, policy development and land-use decisions.
