Survey Manager

**ROLE**:
As an integral part of SMJV’s Technical Services team, the Survey Manager will be responsible for managing and directing the tasks of the survey team. The Survey Manager will have a full understanding of survey methods, machine control, and photogrammetry data collection, processing, and interrogation. The Survey Manager will be involved with our projects from scouting through as-building, capturing the necessary data for the construction of pipelines and facilities, and restoration of pipeline right of ways. The Survey Manager will train and supervise surveyors in all aspects of survey related to pipeline and facility construction.
**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:
The position will report to the Engineering Manager and supervise employees assigned to project sites.
- Manage the Survey team daily, exhibiting excellence in recruiting, selection, onboarding, and training of team members, maintaining a safe and secure work environment: and developing personal growth opportunities.
- Work closely with project teams and internal stakeholders to ensure staffing levels and competencies are suitable for current and upcoming projects.
- Maintain a roster of potential recruits for field positions including surveyors and drone pilots.
- Manage SMJV’s UAV program including solution sourcing, regulatory compliance, training, and procedure development.
- Manage survey procedures and workflows, maintaining best in class usage of GPS, UAV, and machine control technology.
- Support fleet managers through sourcing, installation, and management of GPS machine control equipment.
- Manage SMJV’s survey, machine control, and UAV equipment inventory ensuring equipment is properly inventoried, maintained and updated while identifying opportunities for value added upgrades.
- Full knowledge execution of survey tasks including control point setup, topographic surveys, as-builts, layouts, and any other necessary data capture for the project.
- Train and mentor survey staff for project tasks including survey, machine control and drone operations.
- Ensure surveyors and project technical staff sufficiently trained to process video and photogrammetry imagery and upload machine control files.
- Support HR activities including interviews, salary negotiations, and performance management of survey team.
- Establish and promote best practices in health, safety, and environmental matters in conjunction with the HSE department.
- Note: In addition to these duties personnel are required to carry out such other duties as may be reasonably required to support the objectives of the company._
**POSITION REQUIREMENTS**:
- Qualifications _
- Technological graduate in Geomatics or Civil Engineering Tech or,
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent technical field.
- Registration as Alberta Land Surveyor considered an asset.
- Canada Drone Pilot Certificate - Advanced Operations.
- Experience_
- Minimum 3 years survey team management experience.
- Minimum 5 years pipeline survey experience.
- Minimum 2 years facility survey/construction experience.
- RTK, GPS, and Total Station experience is required.
- Understanding of pipe bending practices and the ability to perform bending calculations is considered an asset.
- Experience in SAGD flow line installation is considered an asset.
- Full understanding of pipeline construction, mainline pipeline installation, and facility construction best practices is required.
- Experience planning and executing UAV photogrammetry and LiDAR missions is required.
- Full understanding of RTK and PPK processing of imagery data is required.
- Machine Control experience is required, experience with Topcon systems is considered an asset.
- Autodesk Civil 3D experience is considered an asset.
- Skills and Knowledge_
- A valid driver’s license with a clean five-year driver’s abstract is required for this role.
- Working knowledge of project management and finance fundamentals.
- Proven ability to achieve successful outcomes within a team environment.
- Ability to drive team execution to schedule and budget.
- Understanding of data management and data security.
- Ability to think analytically and solve problems in a field environment.
- Demonstrated attention to detail.
- Ability to use own initiative, self-manage, and prioritize tasks.
- Complete training and required valid safety tickets is a requirement prior to employment.
- Must be physically fit and able to walk on uneven terrain for sustained periods of time.
**WORKING CONDITIONS**:
This position is based in our Spruce Grove office on an 8-hour per day 5-day work week with regular field work required. Field schedule is 6 days on, 1 day off, 12-hour days.

The Survey Manager reports to the Engineering Manager.
