**Primary function**:
Policy Department’s lead for supporting LAO’s refugee and immigration law.

Home Location: Provincial Office - Toronto
Other Locations: Not applicable

Reporting to: Director, Policy

**Key accountabilities**:

- Preparing policy submissions, oral presentations, briefing notes and other materials for the LAO Chair, Board of Directors, CEO and senior management
- Initiating, preparing, conducting and coordinating complex policy research and/or proposals, including research and analysis of existing and new Legal Aid Ontario programs, policies and government legislation;
- Advocating Legal Aid Ontario’s position on program, policy and legislative issues with government officials and legal aid stakeholders, including lawyer groups, community clinics, and community organizations;
- Writing and/or contributing to policy, research, and communications materials, including briefing notes, letters, and policy papers
- Conducting merit assessments of clients seeking certificates to file appeals to the Refugee Appeal Division
- Other duties as assigned.

**Required skills & experience**:

- Demonstrated knowledge and awareness of the legal needs of LAO’s refugee and immigration clients, including an in-depth knowledge of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
- Comprehensive understanding of legal aid and justice system issues as they relate to refugee law, especially LAO’s certificate program, tariff, and related policies and procedures
- Demonstrated research and practice experience related to refugee law,
- Sound working knowledge of government decision-making process and priorities
- Possess a current network of contacts in legal aid and justice community, specifically in the area of refugee law
- Ability to work independently, solve complex problems, build relationships, and work with teams
- Possess a law degree; with a high level of demonstrated experience post call specifically focused in the area of refugee law, and in good standing with LSO
- Demonstrated excellent policy development and analysis skills, specifically in the area of refugee law
