This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated, organized accounting professional who is highly competent in day-to-day accounting and thrives in a dynamic research administration environment.

The Research Accounting Officer is responsible for a broad scope of accounting duties, managing the upload and reconciliation of payroll journals, financial analysis & administrative support of large strategic grants, and providing analyses/reports on financial data for insights to support research decision-making.

The Research Accounting Officer is a key member of the research finance team and contributes to the smooth running of financial operations within the organization. This role requires a self-starter with strong communication skills who can work independently as well as with Finance & HR colleagues, Institute researchers, and other collaborators at affiliated organizations.

Key responsibilities

**Financial Management of Payroll Reporting (50%)**
- Manage the bi-weekly upload and reconciliation of payroll journals in the research finance system (Microsoft Dynamics 365) including any adjustments to payroll general ledger. (This process uploads the completed pay to the finance system and also the program allocates compensation expense to research projects.)
- Collaborate with partners at the University of Ottawa and other internal/external partners on various grant submissions and/or financial reports, as required.
- Maintain and establish internal controls including the development, recommendation and implementation of policies, standards and procedures.
- Prepare and process journal entries accurately and in a timely manner.
- Prepares periodic financial and administrative reports and analysis for research collaborators (eg. CIHR Research Support Fund report, CFI IOF reconciliation and annual forecast).
- Assists with the corporation’s audit and other project audits, to provide analyses, explanations and supporting documentation as required.
- Assist in or carry out other tasks or adhoc special projects, as assigned.
- Reconcile payroll remittances & clearing entries to G/L accounts. Input entries for benefits and payroll bank transactions.
- Prepare monthly invoices for cost recovery of purchase service payroll from related parties/departments.
- Review and execute month-end salary transfers and adjustments in the finance system.
- Manage ongoing project payroll queries.

**Financial Reporting for Major Projects (25%)**
- Supports Principal Investigators in post-award administration and financial reporting for major research grants. Includes assistance with project set up, periodic analysis of actual expenses to budget, forecasting/budgetary control and general financial guidance to the researcher team.
- Organizes, directs and/or completes production of specific major grant annual reports, ensuring they comply with granting and donor requirements, policies and regulations (for example, for CFI major grants).

**Other Accounting Responsibilities (25%)**
- Input bank adjustments including wire fees, service charges, and interest.
- Administers royalty project accounts, including invoicing for patents and associated distributions.
- Prepare miscellaneous invoicing and transfers.
- Collaborates with the research finance department, HR, our research community and clinical operations so that management of OHIRC Finance activities is consistent and rigorous.

**Requirements**:
**Qualifications/Knowledge**
- University degree or College Diploma in Accounting, Finance, Commerce or equivalent
- Professional accounting designation CPA (CA, CMA, or CGA), or near completion
- Minimum 5 years of broad accounting experience in a research environment, with increasing responsibilities
- Strong knowledge of current accounting standards and practices for public sector bodies or charitable, not-for-profit organizations
- Strong computer skills with proficiency in MS Office 365, e.g. Word, Excel (pivot tables, vlookup), Power Point and Outlook
- Experienced in Microsoft Dynamics 365 for finance, or equivalent

**Experience**
- Excellent financial comprehension and critical analysis
- Demonstrated attention-to-detail and problem solving skills, and ability to work with confidential information
- Experience with producing and analyzing a variety of financial management and budgeting reports
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written)
- Ability to work independently on on-going assignments, to prioritize multiple tasks and effectively manage time to successfully meet strict deadlines
