We are seeking a Research Scientist to join our Catalyst Research and Development team at our Centre for Applied Research (CAR) in Calgary, Alberta. This team focuses on creating innovative catalysts that drive the production of olefin feedstocks and new polyethylene-based polymers with enhanced performance attributes. Additionally, the team actively seeks solutions to align with our goals of circularity and climate care.
**You Will Use Your Expertise To**:
Design and synthesize novel catalysts and materials useful for olefin polymerization, advanced recycling, and other chemical processes.
Design and execute experiments and analyze the data by utilizing high-throughput, automated laboratory tools for parallel synthesis, polymerization, and other catalyst and process research.
Work collaboratively across cross-functional teams to execute Research and Development (R&D) projects in the areas of catalyst, process, and/or product development to enable commercialization of high-performing polyolefin products and chemical processes.
Research, develop, and propose bold, innovative projects with incorporation of sound decision and risk analysis.
Participate as an integral member of a high-performance team through teaching, sharing, collaboration, and communication with all parts of the organization.
Present work activities and progress to project team and leadership.
**What We Are Looking For**:
PhD in chemistry with 3+ years of post-graduate work experience, or Master’s degree (MSc) in chemistry with 5+ years of post-graduate work experience.
Experience in laboratory automation, high-throughput experimentation, and design of experiments.
Experience or familiarity with programming languages commonly used in automation and data analysis (e.g., Python).
Aptitude and passion for computational chemistry (e.g., DFT), artificial intelligence / machine learning, and cheminformatics.
Demonstrated expertise in handling air and water sensitive reagents and reactions. Proficiency in using inert-atmosphere techniques (e.g., glovebox, Schlenk line) to ensure the integrity of sensitive reactions and compounds.
Familiarity with Responsible Care® principles and best laboratory practices for chemical research and development. Strong commitment to safety, health, and environmental protection throughout all aspects of laboratory work.
Proficiency in using various solution and solid-state analytical techniques (NMR, IR, Raman, GC-MS, SEM, etc.) for characterization of molecular compounds and solid materials.
Proven ability to influence peers, work effectively in a high performing team, and work effectively in a highly collaborative research environment.
Ability to think creatively, propose new ideas, and adapt to evolving research goals.
Excellent and innovative problem-solving skills.
A self-starter and proactive; capable of working independently to identify, lead and drive project work to completion while retaining flexibility and maintaining composure under pressure.
