**About the South Huron Hospital Association (SHHA)**:
We serve the Municipality of South Huron and its adjacent communities—a catchment area of approximately 19,000 residents. The hospital is located in the village of Exeter, approximately 30 minutes north of London, and provides 24/7 emergency services in addition to acute, rehabilitation and complex continuing care inpatient services and various diagnostic and ambulatory services. Our staff also supports family practice and walk-in care at the South Huron Medical Centre. As a small rural hospital, we cherish the relationship we have with our community and pledge uncompromising standards to those we serve.

**Position Description**:
The Cook is responsible for the preparation of patient orders and required hospitality items in accordance with applicable regulations.

**Responsibilities**:
1. Food Service to Patients and Non-Patients, inclusive of:

- Developing menus for both patients and non-patients
- Preparing meals for patients, including special orders to accommodate dietary restrictions
- Ensuring that meals are prepared and presented to a high standard of quality, with appropriate portions
- Organizing cutlery, condiments, and beverages (hot or cold) for patients
- Assembling meal trays and delivering to patients
- Preparing and delivering nourishments and food supplies to patient care areas
- Returning used trays/water carafes to food services for sanitation
- Communicating with other staff to keep informed as to patient needs
- Promoting and serving meals in the cafeteria
- Supporting business functions and special occasions (e.g.: staff appreciation events)

2. Organization and Administration of Kitchen, inclusive of:

- Preparing perishable orders as per stock sheet (i.e.: milk, bread, produce)
- Overseeing and monitoring of kitchen inventory / ingredients
- Ordering food and product supplies. Monitoring quality / accuracy of delivered orders
- Properly rotating inventory using a food rotation system, verifying that all food products are dated and organized for quality assurance
- Processing telephone messages
- Operating cash register, handling cash, making change, running reports
- Ensuring the kitchen operates in compliance with Hospital Policies and Procedures, including contingency plans, employee health policies, infection control practices, WHMIS, and other Policies, Procedures and Legislation in effect

3. Ensures Safety and Sanitation of the kitchen, inclusive of:

- Following safe food handling/storage and infection control practices
- Following safe practices with respect to kitchen tools and equipment
- Sanitizing work area, merchandisers and equipment
- Monitoring and recording freezer, refrigeration and food temperatures
- Retaining samples of prepared products as required for future quality assurance
- Consulting as required with Dietician and other experts to ensure that meals meet standards of safety and healthiness.
- Reporting and acting upon unsafe/hazardous conditions

**Qualifications (Education, Experience, Abilities)**:

- Secondary School Diploma and a Current Certificate of Qualification as a Cook are required
- Valid certificate in Safe Food Handling
- Minimum of one (1) year experience in large volume food service in an institutional setting
- Previous restaurant experience an asset, especially experience in ordering and working with suppliers
- Demonstrated familiarity with dietary restrictions and therapeutic diets. Understands methods of accommodating such diets
- Knowledge of legal requirements, including (but not limited to): Food Safety standards, Infection Control practices and procedures, Privacy practices, and other applicable legislation
- Co-operative and able to communicate effectively with patients, public, and other healthcare team members
- Possess good organizational skills. Able to speak and write English fluently.
- Demonstrated history of practicing safety procedures, accident prevention, and proper lifting techniques
- Excels in both a team environment and as a self-directed worker
