“If you are interested in improving and optimizing public services with ML and predictive modeling, this is a perfect opportunity for you. Be a part of a team of research and machine learning scientists improving core public services and get mentored by some of the best minds in AI while doing it.”_
- Dave Staszak, Lead Machine Learning Scientist
**About the Role**
This is a paid Residency that will be undertaken over a twelve-month period with the potential to be hired by our client afterwards (note: at the discretion of the client). The Resident will be reporting to an Amii Scientist and regularly consult with the Client team to share insights and engage in knowledge transfer activities.
**About our Client**
The Edmonton Public Library (EPL) is an award winning modern library focused on expanding the life literacies of Edmonton’s evolving, diverse population. It is a vibrant hub of innovation, seamlessly blending traditional library services with cutting-edge technology. With innovation as a key organizational value, EPL recognizes the importance of leveraging its data for insights and continuous improvement.
**About the Project**
EPL seeks to develop a deeper understanding of customer churn and the characteristics that result in inactivity amongst our customers. By understanding when we may be on the cusp of losing a customer, we can then develop and test intervention strategies to re-engage with customers at risk of drop off.
**Who Are You**
You have completed a graduate-level program or higher (M.Sc/Ph.D) in Computing Science, ML, or Engineering, with substantial research or project experience in machine learning, deep learning, and/or large language models. You are proficient in Python and familiar with key ML frameworks and libraries such as Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, and Pandas. Your positive attitude towards learning new applied domains and your ability to communicate technical concepts clearly make you a valuable team player. You are enthusiastic about collaborating across interdisciplinary teams to achieve excellence.
**What You Will Be Doing**
In this role, you will design, implement, and optimize ML algorithms specifically tailored for EPL’s services. You will develop ML models to predict customer churn, contributing to the enhancement of EPL’s products and services. Your responsibilities include preparing and curating relevant datasets from EPL’s Integrated Library System (ILS), Data Warehouse, and digital platforms, utilizing commercial and open-source tools to enhance data and ML tasks, and optimizing ML pipelines to ensure scalability and real-time processing. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop client-centric solutions, participate in client meetings, and contribute to reports on project progress.
**Required Skills / Expertise**
We’re looking for a talented and enthusiastic individual with solid knowledge of machine learning, demonstrated experience with supervised learning, and experience in applied settings.
**Key Responsibilities**:
- Design, implement, optimize, and evaluate ML algorithms and models tailored for customer churn prediction, with a specific focus on developing, training, and refining solutions for churn classification problems
- Prepare and curate relevant datasets for ML training and optimization from diverse sources like EPL’s Integrated Library System and EPL’s Data Warehouse
- Utilize relevant commercial and open-source tools to enhance data and ML tasks
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop minimum viable products (MVPs) and client-centric solutions
- Engage in regular client meetings, contributing to presentations and reports on project progress
- Optimize ML pipelines to ensure efficiency, scalability, and real-time processing capabilities
**Required Qualifications**:
- Completion of a graduate level program or higher (M.Sc/Ph.D) in Computing Science, ML or Engineering
- Research or project experience in machine learning and classification models
- Proficient in Python programming language and related ML frameworks, libraries, and toolkits (e.g., Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Pandas)
- A positive attitude towards learning and understanding a new applied domain
- Must be legally eligible to work in Canada
**Preferred Qualifications**:
- Experience with preprocessing large datasets from varied systems
- Familiarity with data lakes and data warehouses
- Experience with deploying machine learning models in production environments or strong software engineering (or MLE) skills is a plus
**Non-Technical Requirements**:
- Desire to take ownership of a problem and demonstrated leadership skills
- Interdisciplinary team player enthusiastic about working together to achieve excellence
- Capable of critical and independent thought
- Intellectual curiosity and the desire to learn new things, techniques, and technologies
