**ABOUT US**

The York University Co-operative Daycare Centre (YUCDC) is situated on the Keele Campus of York University. YUCDC’s mission is to support and foster an inclusive learning environment for the children in our care, and to engage them within the community at large, with the goal of instilling in the children respect and appreciation in themselves and in their communities. We work with community partners to provide our children with a safe and stimulating early learning experience that acknowledges and celebrates the histories, heritage and the diversity of our Indigenous peoples and the diverse cultures in Canada.

**ABOUT THE ROLE**

In accordance with the Childcare and Early Years Act, the Assessment for Quality Improvement tool for the City of Toronto, and the regulations and procedures of other legislative bodies and the Policies and Procedures for the YUCDC, the **Cook** is responsible for the planning of the menus, food purchasing, meal preparation and the serving of meals and snacks for 149 children.

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**

**Overall**
- Plan and prepare snacks and lunches for the children, according to Canada’s Food Guide.
- Document daily menu changes as necessary.
- Portion and distribute snacks and lunches at designated times to the programs.
- Post the menus and any daily substitutions for children with allergies or dietary restrictions.
- Ensure all Individual Anaphylaxis Plans (IAP), allergies and food restrictions are posted in the kitchen. All IAPs must be understood and strictly adhered to.
- Compile weekly inventories of food in preparation for the upcoming week.
- Ensure safety and sanitization in the kitchen as per Toronto Public Health requirements.
- Wash and sanitize dishes and utensils after meals time.
- Assist with the supervision of the children when deemed necessary.
- Other duties as assigned.

**Health and Safety**

**- **Wear appropriate kitchen clothing.
- Practice frequent hand washing
- Follow the handling and serving instructions to preserve the maximum quality of product served.
- Ensure kitchen equipment and appliances are clean, well maintained, and safe at all times.
- Date, label, and store food properly.
- Meet the needs of children with allergies and dietary restrictions. Ensure all dietary needs are current and posted.

**- **Maintain an organized and sanitary kitchen.
- Ensure regular disinfecting of all cupboards, shelves, small and large appliances.
- Take out kitchen garbage as needed. Sweep and mop the kitchen floor as needed.
- Follow appropriate dish washing and sanitizing procedures.
- Ensure that there are cleaning supplies available and used in accordance with the guidelines.
- Assist in maintaining a safe kitchen environment by promptly reporting any existing and/or potential workplace hazards.
- Report maintenance as required and ensure issues are addressed in a timely manner.
- Facilitate and participate in monthly fire drills and evacuations.
- Report serious occurrences to the Executive Director
- Perform emergency first aid as required.

**Communication**
- Maintain and build strong, healthy, professional relationships with the staff, and parents.
- Respond to parent inquiries regarding the children’s diet while maintaining confidentiality.
- Assist and participate in planning of parent nights and special events.
- Ensure all pertinent information is distributed to the parents and staff.
- Participates in continuous professional development and attends all mandatory training.

**Financial Management**
- Assist in annual budget planning and its monitoring.

**Record Keeping**
- Ensure temperature checks of the fridges and the dishwasher are conducted and recorded daily.
- Ensure daily temperature checks of the food are conducted and recorded prior to serving.

**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES**
- Knowledge of Canada’s Food Guide
- Strong multi-tasking skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and remain focused to meet deadlines.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient with the use of various forms of digital technology tools.

- Have the physical stamina and ability to kneel, bend, lift up to 40 lbs. and stand for extended periods.

**EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS**

**Education**
- Diploma or Certificate in Culinary Arts or Food Management
- Food Handler’s Certificate

**Experience**

**- **Previous experience working in a kitchen cooking for large groups, preferably in a childcare setting.
- Experience working with Infants, Toddlers, Preschoolers, Kinders, and School-Agers.
