The Meadow Lake Tribal Council (MLTC) is seeking a dynamic, motivated individual to fill a full time, term position of Waskoosis Safe Shelter (WSS) Childcare & Recreation Worker. Term is from hire date to March 31, 2024 and may be extended based on funding and program needs.

The WSS Childcare & Recreation Worker will work closely with the WSS Manager, and is responsible for assisting shelter clients with their childcare needs while they are in programming or attending appointments; this is done through planning and implementing activities and lesson plans that are age-appropriate to stimulate the child’s intellectual, physical, and emotional growth. The employee will be vigilant in character and able to monitor children throughout the day, ensuring their safety at all times. Parents and Shelter Workers will be able to rely on the Childcare & Recreation Worker to maintain clear communication with them and act appropriately in case of an emergency.

**Duties (include but not limited to)**:

- Plans, prepares, and provides programming materials and activities for children in care.
- Ensure children are learning positive behaviours and are provided with guidance or approved discipline, as needed.
- Create a positive atmosphere through fair, progressive, and consistent expectations.
- Wash and disinfect all toys and surfaces in the playroom.
- Know where each child in care is at all times, ensuring that children in care are never left unsupervised.
- Exercise the legal duty to report any suspected, observed, or disclosed neglect or abuse of a child.
- Establish and maintain professional relationships with families by providing ongoing updates, support, and resources over the course of their shelter stay.
- Work with parents to help children progress towards educational and behavioural goals.

**Qualifications**:
Minimum:

- Grade 12 with experience in child care may be considered.

Preferred:

- Early Childhood Education Diploma/Certificate

Other:

- Exceptional communication, teaching, and interpersonal skills.
- Positive, caring, and compassionate attitude.
- Decisiveness, patience, and stamina to chase after, lift, and carry children.
- Excellent leadership skills and confidence giving direction.
- Strong time and task management skills.
- Strong understanding of stages of childhood development.
- Capacity to serve as a strong role model for the children in care.
- Ability to respond with sensitivity to the needs of individual children and their families, respecting diversities in age, gender, developmental level, religion, sexual orientation, and cultural background.
- Knowledge surrounding how witnessing domestic violence can affect children.
- An understanding of Northern Saskatchewan and the clientele we serve is a definite asset.
- Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with children of all ages.
- Valid Driver’s License
- Ability to speak Cree and/or Dene Language.
- Clear/Negative Criminal Record Check inclusive of the Vulnerable Sector Check.
