A Regular Full-Time opportunity exists within the Streets Department for a Concrete Finisher to perform finishing work involving some skill in the use of standard finishing tools on a variety of concrete sidewalk, curb and pavement projects. The incumbent is allowed some independence as to procedure and may advise other workers as to the forming, mixing, placing, and finishing of the material. The work of this class is distinguished from that of labourers occasionally engaged in similar work by the more complex and technical nature of the finishing duties. Assignments are received from a supervisor who checks for workmanship and the attainment of desired objectives.
The concrete finisher will place, screed and tamp concrete; place reinforcing material and expansion joints where required; float, trowel, groove, edge and roll the surface; set forms in repairing, reconstructing and maintaining sidewalks, curbs and pavements; spray completed surface with curing agents as required and cover completed work to protect from weather; drive a truck used to transport material and equipment; and perform related work as required.
**The successful applicant will possess**:
- Sound knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in forming, placing, and finishing concrete on sidewalk, curb and pavement projects.
- Knowledge of general street construction and maintenance methods and practices and specific knowledge of methods and practices pertaining to the construction and maintenance of concrete sidewalks, curbs and pavements.
- Ability to efficiently grade, form, place, and finish concrete to prescribed specifications.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to direct other workers.
- Skill in the use of standard concrete finishing tools.
**Qualifications**:Completion of Grade 10 and experience as a Concrete Finisher in the construction and maintenance of sidewalks, curbs and pavements or similar operations. A valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s Licence and a Driver’s Abstract that reflects a safe and responsible driving record is required.
**Salary**:The pay range for this unionized position is $30.71 per hour (2021 rates) based on a 40-hour work week.
