Job Summary
Facilities proudly builds, maintains and improves campus facilities to create a safe and welcoming environment in support of teaching, learning and research. Reporting to the Chief Operating Engineer, the Manager, Refrigeration and Small Boiler Systems (Manager) is an integral member of the Facilities team.

The Manager has the primary and important responsibility to ensure the preventative maintenance of the university’s cooling and refrigeration systems, small gas fired heating systems, and supporting mechanical and electrical systems. With a safety-first orientation, the Manager manages the work of the university’s Refrigeration Mechanics and Gas Technicians to ensure that the university’s mechanical cooling systems, along with small heating system operations are conducted in an efficient and safe manner. The Manager participates in the development of energy conservation plans and collaborate with Facilities’ Project Managers, as well as external consultants to ensure that projects are conducted safely, that installed equipment complies with applicable codes and standards, and is maintained in accordance with applicable codes and standards. The Manager must be available to respond to emergency calls outside of normal working hours. In addition, the Manager works an assigned shift and is on a rotating call-in list for emergency calls from the Emergency Response Centre.

**Job Description**:
**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- As a competent supervisor as defined under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, ensures that legislated safety regulations, university and departmental safety programs are followed.
- Oversees and updates standards/procedures and training manuals by conferring with, industry colleagues, identifying new trends/processes, referencing applicable codes and regulations, writing training protocols and drafting standards/procedures for approval by the Chief Operating Engineer to ensure compliance with all governing bodies associated with refrigeration and cooling systems.
- Coordinates the response to system failures, service interruptions and emergency calls for systems; contacts appropriate person according to established procedures to reset systems, assess and perform required repairs.
- In consultation with the Chief Operating Engineer, establishes and monitors preventative maintenance process/program including mechanical and electrical systems by planning and utilizing computerized tools, coordinating activities and monitoring schedules to ensure completion prescribed by manufacturers and pursuant to code enforcement agencies (i.e. Technical Standards & Safety Authority, Electrical Safety Authority, Ministry of Labour).
- Liaises with and supervises the work of outside project managers and consultants by providing input regarding code requirements and contract specifications, coordinating and inspecting work to ensure adherence to specifications and other facility requirements.
- Develops for approval by the Chief Operating Engineer, implements, and maintains Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) for chillers, refrigeration systems, cooling towers and small gas fire heating systems as well as monitors and adjusts chemical treatment systems to remain compliant with industry best practices/standards.
- Remains current with industry best practices with a strong focus on innovation. Recommends upgrades to automation and equipment based on modern industry standards to ensure operations do not become obsolete.
- Maintains an inventory of supplies, equipment and tools; completes associated reports and records; evaluates/recommends purchase of related equipment and supplies; requisitions supplies and equipment, as needed.
- Fosters a productive and harmonious workplace through the promotion of a positive, respectful team environment, which recognizes the value of all Facilities employees.
- Plans, prioritizes and manages the work of employees, providing strategic and tactical advice, guidance and coaching. Identifies the need for staff resources, participates on staffing committees, and makes effective recommendations regarding employee selection.
