**Mental Health Specialist**:
The Mental Health Specialist will join the Abbotsford Police Department’s PATHWAYS program. This program’s aim is to create a long-term, integrated approach to combat gang violence. Gang involvement is a complex process that happens over time. This process involves influences from a young person’s life experiences, including familial, school, and social experiences. The Mental Health Specialist will conduct risk assessments, create an intervention plans, provide culturally appropriate gang prevention and intervention services for at-risk youths and young adults and will support their families.
**Main Responsibilities**:
- **Conduct risk assessments**: Conduct assessments to understand the needs, strengths, and challenges of the participants referred to the PATHWAYS program. This may involve gathering information about their academic performance, family background, family dynamics, mental health, substance use, and other factors that may put them at risk of gang involvement.
- **Develop early intervention plan**: Based on the risk assessment, develop an early intervention plan, which includes identifying goals and objectives, selecting appropriate interventions, and establishing a timeline for intervention.
- **Provide early intervention**: Provide interventions using evidence-based approaches.
- **Monitor progress**: Monitor participants’ progress throughout their intervention and adjust the intervention plans as needed.
- **Collaborate with other professionals and family members**: Work closely with other professionals, such as school staff and participants’ family members.
- **Educate parents and caregivers**: Provide education and support to parents and caregivers, helping them to understand the participants’ mental health needs and how to support the intervention plan.
- **Maintain documentation**: Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of assessments, intervention plans, and progress notes, ensuring compliance with the program strategy and government requirements.
- **Evaluate outcomes**: Evaluate the effectiveness of interventions and identify areas for improvement. This may involve gathering data about academic performance, employment, and other indicators of success.
- **Prepare an exit plan**: Upon a successful intervention, create a customized exit plan based on the needs of the participants and to prevent recidivism.
**Other Responsibilities**:
- Assist and participate in community meetings, workshops, and training for youths, parents, and service providers.
- Support Youth and Family Outreach Workers with interventions.
- Be willing to accompany operational police officers in unmarked police vehicles for the purpose of providing gang prevention and intervention services.
**Qualifications and Requirements**:
- A master’s degree in Counselling, Behavioural Sciences, Psychology, Social Work, or related field
- Experience working with children and youths in a mental health setting, or specific experience working with children and/or youths who exhibit early signs and symptoms of anxiety, depression, anger, loss, or other emotional or behavioural challenges
- Experience with best practice and/or evidenced-based therapies and prevention and/or early intervention activities
- Cultural competence with at-risk youths and marginalized and diverse communities
- Knowledge of information-sharing practices and protocols
- Knowledge of case management
- Knowledge of trauma-informed practices
- Ability to work collaboratively with community partners, staff, and participants
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- A valid BC drivers license
**Salary Range**: $ 37 to $ 45 per hour
