The role of the Chaplain is to promote the overall spiritual health of The Gateway through chapel services, devotions, one-on-one meetings, and other recreational programs. The chaplain is involved in the case management process for Gateway residents, and provides direct support to residents, community members and staff as needed.

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Provide pastoral care to residents and community members through visits and/or correspondence.
- Arrange weekly chapel services (Order of Services, PowerPoint slides, and songs).
- Develop and maintain the following programs: Bible Studies, regular devotions, and other related programs.
- Be a participating member of the Gateway Case Management team.
- Weekly preaching at chapel services.
- Preaching assignments as required
- Provide on-going spiritual counselling and pastoral care to residents as required.
- Submit all chapel statistics to administration as required.
- Provide follow-up counseling and assistance.
- Make hospital visits to any resident or community member who may be hospitalized.
- Distribute Bibles and other Christian literature, and other religious literature as requested and available.
- Make referrals for residents or community members, upon request, to Salvation Army corps and churches in the area and other places of worship where he/she will be residing.
- If necessary, take leadership in arranging funerals for residents/community members with funeral homes, or host in the Gateway Chapel and/or other agencies as requested.
- Co-ordinate special activities such as Christmas, Easter, etc.
- Keep accurate records and documentation (e.g., incident reports, log notes and thorough case notes).
- Provide pastoral care to staff.
- Participate in Program Management and CTI meetings.
- Support the Director in other duties as required.

**WORKING CONDITIONS**:

- This is a permanent full time position working 40 hours per week.
- Providing support to residents, community members, and staff in a work setting.
- Working on site at The Gateway and meeting current/former residents in the community.

**QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS**:

- Post secondary education in Pastoral Counseling, Religious Education or Biblical and theological studies.
- Certificate in First Aid/CPR, Crisis Intervention and Conflict Resolution
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License and a current copy of a Driver’s abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required (no vehicle required).
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

**EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE**:

- One to three years of prior related experience, including frontline casework experience in a social service environment.
- Previous experience providing individual support to people living in poverty, dealing with mental health issues, addictions, social isolation and/or homelessness.
- Good knowledge of community resources

**SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES**:

- Strong understanding of and commitment to social justice issues, equity issues, anti-racism, anti-discrimination, and anti-oppression.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, critical thinking, and time management skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills (computer skills essential).
- Well-developed skills and ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Highly developed understanding of and proven ability to communicate appropriate professional boundaries.
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
