TWO Summer student positions are available

Aviary Assistant, Parrot Partners Canada (Parrot Care/Cleaner/Maintenance Position)

Parrot Partners Canada is recruiting two (2) full-time Summer Student Aviary Assistants. Applicants must be available on weekdays and some weekends. The primary responsibility of the cleaner-maintenance positions is to ensure our building remains clean and orderly, as well as to produce and maintain the highest levels of biosecurity and hygiene in all parrot locations.

**Responsibilities**:

- Parrot feeding, care, enrichment, etc.
- Clean, order, stock, and supply designated aviary areas (dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, pressure washing, restroom cleaning, etc.)
- Perform and document routine inspection and maintenance activities as they relate to building maintenance, as well as parrot well-being and safety
- Carry out heavy cleansing tasks, including disinfecting and sterilizing parrot cages, bowls, perches, and toys, as well as floors and surrounding areas
- Scrupulously maintain hygiene & bio-security standards
- Participate in special projects related to the above
- Notify management of deficiencies or need for repairs
- Adjust and conduct minor repairs required to ensure the health & happiness of resident and visiting parrots
- Stock and maintain supply rooms, kitchen, and enrichment materials
- Cooperate with staff and volunteers
- Follow all health and safety regulations as well as internal standards and operating procedures
- Additional tasks as assigned (including assisting with public tours & events)

**Requirements**:

- Lives locally and/or reliable transportation
- Proven attention to detail
- Strong personal work ethic and meticulous cleaning standards
- Ability to handle & maintain commercial-grade cleaning equipment
- Familiarity with Material Safety Data Sheets
- Willingness to learn and operate as a team player
- Integrity and compassion for animals
- Previous parrot experience preferred but not mandatory
- Previous experience as a cleaner preferred but not mandatory
- High school diploma preferred

Additional requirements:
To be eligible as a Summer Student, youth must:

- be between 17 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment*
- be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment**; and,
- have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations

*The youth must be 17 years of age at the beginning of the employment period. The youth may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period as long as the youth was 30 at the beginning of the employment period.

**International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada. Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible. As the objective of the Canada Summer Jobs program is to support youth entering the Canadian labour market, the temporary nature of an international student's time in Canada does not allow for a long-term connection to the labour market.

JOB DURATION & PAY RATE: 8 weeks, 35hrs/week, $16.50/hr (with the flexibility to spread out hours over the summer).
