Consistently ranked as one of the best comprehensive universities in Canada, the University of Guelph, the Department of Athletics & Recreation (“Athletics”) and Student Housing Services (SHS) are committed to fostering an inclusive learning, training, and working environment where all students, athletes, volunteers, staff, patrons, and community members experience an authentic sense of belonging. In Winter 2021, Athletics created an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Advisory Council with the Office of Diversity & Human Rights (DHR), aimed at creating and fostering a strong culture of inclusion and sense of belonging for all students, athletes, staff, volunteers, patrons, and community members. The Council is focused on assessing Athletics’ and SHS’ policies, procedures, processes, activities, and department culture and setting a proactive agenda to embed equity, inclusion, diversity, anti-racism, and anti-oppression into the Department’s ongoing operations. Athletics and SHS have also engaged in education and training sessions with DHR and have worked alongside Human Resources to identify and address barriers in hiring practices and recruitment.

Reporting jointly to the Directors of Athletics and SHS, the Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism Advisor will have a leadership role in supporting both Department’s EDI and anti-racism initiatives. Responsibilities include:

- Sitting as a member of and supporting and implementing the work of the EDI Advisory Committee.
- Evaluating EDI and anti-racism strategies and work with core objectives.
- Support working groups from the EDI Advisory Committee and working closely supporting them in executing the Committee’s visioning.
- Ensure consistency of the University’s and Department’s EDI strategy to ensure alignment with current programs, services and initiatives.
- Working collaboratively across Student Affairs departments the Department of Human Rights, and with stakeholders to recommend solutions and implement the appropriate delivery systems to foster an environment of inclusion and respect.

Other responsibilities include:

- Acting as a point person for students and staff who are experiencing any form of discrimination and providing expertise and mentorship to students and staff.
- Identifying best practices, establishing and maintaining EDI and anti-racism standards, developing benchmarks and metrics to inform and measure progress.
- Representing Athletics on various EDI and anti-racism related university committees and initiatives and developing and supporting staff in the execution of EDI and anti-racism programming and initiatives,
- Providing advice to students and student organizations in the execution of inclusion programming,
- Working with DHR to plan and coordinate dedicated EDI and anti-racism programs and events for Athletics and SHS
- Overseeing the logistics of EDI and anti-racism training for students, student staff, athletes, coaches, volunteers, and other staff.

Requirements for this role:

- Undergraduate degree in a related field along with two (2) or more years of related experience. An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be considered.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the needs and experiences of equity-seeking student populations and community members
- Experience working with Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour communities.
- Experience designing, delivering and evaluating equity, diversity, inclusion and anti-racism trainings and workshops.
- Knowledge of anti-racism, shadeism, colonialism, racism, anti-Black racism, oppression, and intersectionality informed by lived experience.
- Experience with needs assessment, program design, learning outcome development, program coordination and evaluation.
- knowledge of strategies and programs to support the inclusion and retention of marginalized students.
- Understanding of the concepts of systemic and structural discrimination and bias and their impact on equity-seeking communities.
- Previous experience advising and working with student organizations and staff.
- Previous experience coordinating special events, or student activities, preferably in a university or college setting.
- Strong computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office Applications.
- Strong communication, listening, problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
