NFM is a registered non-for-profit charity organization that strives to represent the rich heritage and culture of the fishing industry and its people who have shaped the communities along the
Northumberland Strait. It pays tribute to Fishers and Fishing families as expressed by the motto,
“Where the salt of the sea, meets the salt of the earth.” We operate as a community museum that collects, interprets, and displays the material and oral culture of the Northumberland Strait fishery and its people, with the focus on the human stories of the fishery, as well as operating the
Lighthouse Research Centre based on the documentation collected and assembled by Rip Irwin.
We also act as a community hub, hosting community groups and events, creating exhibitions and displays, educational programs and cultural events in a place where anyone and everyone can share a pleasant and fulfilling experience by ensuring we are a welcoming, diverse, and inclusive space where all can be comfortable.

Heritage Interpreters act as the lead interpretive staff for the museum. The key role of the
Heritage Interpreters is to provide visitors and groups with guided tours of the Northumberland
Fisheries Museum. Tours are offered in order to provide an enriched, informative, and interactive museum experience. Interpreters greet visitors and take them through the various exhibits of the main museum, providing background information on the fishing industry of the Northumberland
Strait. This position also provides information on a selection of artifacts on display and answers visitors questions regarding the exhibits and fishing industry.

This position is also responsible for teaching students during class visits and summer camps, including supervision and entertaining a variety of age levels. This will mean that a criminal background check will be required upon hiring.

The position assists in planning, designing, upgrading, maintenance, and implementing current or new exhibits in conjunction with other staff. This includes producing written and visual materials for research reports, presentations, and displays. They will also help with day to day tours and activities, front desk reception, cash handling, and gift shop sales.

Students involved or interested in Museum Studies, History, Anthropology, Indigenous Studies,
Biology, Marine Biology, Aquaculture, Ecology, or Education are some of the key fields that would be an asset or key fit for this position.

No diplomas or certificates required, high school and post secondary students who meet the program requirements are encouraged to apply.
- Moderate computer skills will be an asset.
- Knowledge of local fishing industry, history &/or community history, OR, ability to learn local fishing industry, history and community history, and give presentations as required.
- Enjoy meeting & working with the public
- Appreciation and understanding how to communicate effectively to different cultures and age groups.
- Excellent organization & interpersonal skills.
- Excellent oral communication skills.
- Experience in public speaking.
- Able to assist co-workers and new staff.
- Ability to speak French is an asset.
- Extensive and thorough knowledge of historical objects related to the fishery
- Experience with history theory and research
- Educational background in a cultural history discipline
- Work experience that includes museum or heritage research, and work with historical objects
- Experience working with a range of stakeholders and special interest groups

**Job Types**: Full-time, Seasonal
Contract length: 14 weeks

**Salary**: $13.60-$15.00 per hour

Schedule:

- Monday to Friday
- Weekend availability

Ability to commute/relocate:

- Pictou, NS: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)
