- About The Aspen PCN
The Aspen Primary Care Network first became operational in 2010, serving three communities. Since then, we have grown to include partnership between family physicians in Athabasca, Westlock, Barrhead, Swan Hills, Kinuso, High Prairie and Wabasca, Alberta. In total, the PCN has 43 participating physicians serving approximately 30,000 residents within our region.
Our priorities are to facilitate health promotion and disease prevention, and to enable successful self-management of chronic diseases and conditions.

The role of the Aspen PCN Physician Assistant (PA) is to work collaboratively with the patients, supervising physician/s, family physicians, and other team members in a multi-disciplinary environment to ensure the provision of high-quality evidence-based health care to the practice population. The PA will act as a healthcare extender, working under the supervision of a physician to complement existing services and aid in improving patient access to health care. The PA will provide a range of health services to patients, including both preventative and complex, comprehensive care. The PA will work to full scope within the primary care setting, as directed by the CPSA Scope of Practice and supervising physician.
- What You Will Do
- Work collaboratively within the PCN to enhance the delivery of primary care services to identified patient populations, under the direct or indirect supervision of a Physician
- Perform a variety of PA duties to provide consistent high-quality care to meet the needs of the patients through the lifespan
- Conduct assessments, provide comprehensive documentation, develop and implement treatment plans with the collaborative care team
- Document patient care in compliance with quality standards and regulatory requirements
- Initiate and follow-up on appropriate investigations
- Consult with supervising physician to obtain direction, guidance, and expertise
- Order, obtain, and review laboratory, diagnostic and other reports relevant to patients’ care
- Facilitate appropriate referrals to providers, resources, and programs
- Deliver chronic disease management education according to clinical practice guidelines
- Identify needs and set priorities in collaboration with the client and other team members
- Assist in the development of policies and protocols for clinic programs
- Participate in evaluation of the clinic and its services
- To be responsible for own professional development through a variety of strategies highlighted in annual performance reviews
- What You Need To Succeed
- Excellent knowledge of PA Scope of Practice
- Strong, effective written and oral communication skills, high level of perceptiveness
- Critical thinking skills
- Ability to build a good working relationship with healthcare professionals, patients, families, and other members of the community
- Ability to prioritize, manage time effectively and be flexible in a very active work environment
- Respect and understanding of privacy and confidentiality
- Thrives in a complex and fast-paced environment
- High levels of integrity, professional behaviour and independent judgement
- Knowledge of and ability to use electronic medical records
- Successful completion of a recognized accredited PA educational program
- Physician Assistant certification through the Physician Assistant’s Certification Council of Canada (PACCC) or National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants in the United States of America
- Current CPSA Registration
- Current Canadian Association of Physician Assistants (CAPA) membership
- BLS/ACLS
- 3+ years experience preferred
- Valid driver’s licence
- Clear criminal record check with vulnerable sector
