**Position Overview**:
NOTE: Only applicants who complete the recorded phone assessment questions will be considered.

We are seeking an after-school Respite Carer for an exceptional 12-year-old young man with some physical and cognitive disabilities who can present as autistic. Alongside his unique needs, he possesses remarkable strengths, including curiosity, a sense of humour, digital learning aptitude and a loving nature when a good connection is made with his care provider. This one-to-one care position is based in a private household in the Queen/Main area of downtown Brampton. A minimum of two years of direct experience working with special needs individuals is required.

The Respite Carer MUST be available for **Bus pickup at 2:30 - 5:30 p.m. 3-5 days per week**. This is an excellent opportunity for someone wishing to enhance their skills in supporting special needs adolescents. The person in this role will be provided with many resources and opportunities for skill development related to our son's particular needs.

**Key Responsibilities**:
**-Supervision and Safety**: Provide constant supervision and ensure safety and well-being.

**-Engagement and Development**: Encourage cognitive, social, and physical development by engaging in play-based learning activities. These activities encompass reading, oral/written expression, artistic and constructive pursuits, physical activities, and exploration in science and math. (Strong language skills are essential to support his language development)

**-Activity Planning**: Research and develop activities as needed, utilizing parent-prepared activities and resources.
**- Routine Reinforcement**: Reinforce his daily routines and promote positive social behaviours.

**-Screen Time Management**: Encourage limited screen time, except for short reinforcing rewards or interactive gameplay. Familiarity with video gaming and Nintendo Switch is advantageous.
**- Life Skills and Independence**:Foster self-care skills to promote independence and enhance communication and social skills.

**-Outings and Activities**: Accompany and facilitate outings, such as trips to the local pool and library.
- **Mealtime Assistance**: Serve appropriate snacks and meals during supervision hours.

**-Physical Activity**: Monitor and encourage physical activity and play.
**- Clean-Up**: Maintain a clean and organized home environment after activities and meals.
- **Communication**: Maintain open communication channels with parents throughout the supervision period, including text and phone calls.
- **Medication Administration**: Administer 3:30 pm medication as required and keep an EpiPen accessible for potential allergic reactions to pork products. Administer first aid as needed.
- **Emergency Response**: Promptly notify parents and seek appropriate emergency medical care if a medical emergency situation arises.
- **Documentation**: Complete daily verbal handoff or a written log with parents.

- Rate of Pay**:$24 per hour**, to be invoiced bi-weekly.
