**Who we are**:
Intellectual Property Ontario (IPON) is a new provincial agency that will serve as a go-to resource for Intellectual Property (IP) expertise to help researchers and companies maximize the value of their IP, strengthen their capacity to grow and compete in the global market.

**Location**:This is a remote-first opportunity within Ontario. We have offices in both Kitchener and Toronto where the team meets on an occasional basis (monthly) or as needed.

**Responsibilities**:
This is a new addition to the team to handle our growing analysis demands and need IP and Patent expertise. The Analyst will identify and collect IP (patent) and other related sectoral data, and provide expert analysis and synthesis, to present key trends, risks and opportunities applicable to a global IP landscape, as it relates to the needs of IPON's priority sectors (AI, Automotive, and Med-tech) and stakeholders. Your responsibilities include:

- Providing research and analysis of patent and market trends in specific sectors, including sector-specific patents in AI, Automotive, and Med-tech, and translating the trends into broader IP intelligence reports for both internal IPON staff, and selected IPON clients
- Conducting patent searches and analysis to provide information on patentability, validity, freedom-to-operate and infringement
- Building intelligence and analysis data for a broad range of data users and stakeholders
- Using data analysis to support IPON's business planning and ongoing development and evaluation of programming
- Preparing and presenting specialized information on patent and other IP needs to support IPON in all areas of work
- Handling awareness searches of citation and industry profiles with information sources like on-line databases, internet and hardcopy information
- Supporting data analysts to strategize complicated searches
- Reviewing search results and generating reports
- Supporting the creation of a competitive landscape and helps identify key market trends that could serve as inputs for IPON's future service offering strategy

**Qualifications**:

- Postsecondary degree (e.g., Bachelor of Technology, Engineering, Computer Science) or a combination of education, training and equivalent experience
- 4+ years of IP experience as an IP analyst with expertise in patent searches using commercial IP tools, freedom to operate searches, and infringement analysis
- Experience in working with patent or IP related data platforms (Innography, Patsnap, PatBase, etc.) to do IP landscaping is required, including FTO (Freedom to Operate) or Prior Art searches
- Experience in patent analysis or landscaping in one of the priority sectors (Automotive, Artificial Intelligence, Medical Technology), is an asset
- Experience in consulting or contracting for a service firm, with a wide range of landscaping skills
- Knowledge of IPON's mandate/structure and related legislative and regulatory frameworks (e.g., O: Regulation 4/22 made under the Development Corporations Act), programs, priorities and stakeholder groups
- Ability to work with specialized software (e.g., IP software, data visualization tools, and statistical software)
- Technical understanding of the invention disclosure, and identification of search focus
- Familiarity with relevant Intellectual Property legal principles
- Critical thinking skills in constructing and conducting patent searches using search strings
- Analytical and research skills to gather information to inform decisions, analyze results and complete search reports in timely manner
- Strong communication skills to effectively present conclusions
