**Wendat Community Programs requires a full time, permanent Crisis Worker**.

Crisis Workers provide mental health assessments to individuals experiencing mental health crises in the emergency room at Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH). Crisis Workers also see clients for 1-6 sessions of brief, solution focused therapy by appointment at GBGH or Wendat’s offices.

**Job Summary**:
Crisis Workers provide a comprehensive mental health assessment to adults experiencing mental health crisis in the emergency room of Georgian Bay General Hospital. This assessment helps to inform ER staff/physicians to determine the future care path for each client. Crisis workers also see clients for brief, solution focused therapy by appointment at Wendat’s offices. Crisis workers may also assist to staff the mental health walk in clinic located in Midland.

**Qualifications**:

- BSW, RN, RPN, SW, SSW, RP and must be a member in good standing of a college of a regulated health profession.
- 3-5 years of experience in mental health and crisis work.
- Functional understanding and ability to use concepts, principles and specific techniques of crisis intervention within a clinical context.
- Understanding of the Mental Health Act, psychiatric diagnostic categories and related symptoms.
- Experience assessing mental status and assessing risk of suicide using various assessments tools and models.
- Thorough familiarity with community resources.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle
- Proficiency in both official languages is an asset

**Hours of Work**:
This program operates from 9 am to 9 pm Monday to Friday and 9 am to 5 pm on weekends and holidays. This position works 40 hours a week, on Monday to Friday within these hours. Occasional flexibility in these hours is required and expected to allow for vacation and sick leave coverage, staff training, client/agency emergencies, special agency functions and other responsibilities.

**Agency Responsibilities**:

- Ensure at all times the confidentiality of client and agency information.
- Respect the individual dignity and right to self-determination of all clients.
- Establish collaborative relationships within and outside of the agency to enhance the reputation of the organization and facilitate the rehabilitation and community acceptance of persons with mental illness.
- Conduct all matters in a professional manner, be punctual, responsible and trustworthy.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records, reports and statistics as required by the agency.
- Participate in staff meetings, agency committees and external committees as appropriate.
- Other duties as assigned by the Program Supervisor or Executive Director.

**Specific Responsibilities**:

- Responds to requests from Georgian Bay General Hospital to immediately see adults in the Emergency Room, who are presenting with a mental illness and emergent needs. Emergent meaning their situation may become life threatening within 24 hours. May also be asked to assess persons who are in-patients of the hospital who are experiencing psychiatric crisis.
- Conduct mental health status assessments and assess for risk of suicide and make recommendations to the ER team or referring physician. Conducts other assessments as required. May assist with admission to Waypoint or other acute care facility, when indicated.
- Facilitates a community plan of care when indicated by keeping up to date on local community services and making referrals/connections to appropriate resources for those individuals who require further assistance.
- Establishes strong working relationships with staff members of Georgian Bay General Hospital, Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care, Royal Victoria Regional Centre, Kinark Child and Family Services, Catholic Family Services and other service providers.
- Accepts referrals from the County Crisis Line and family physicians for next day appointments.
- Provide crisis intervention and counselling (1-6 sessions) to persons with a mental illness, aged 16 and over, who are in urgent need of assistance. Urgent meaning their situation may develop into a life threatening situation within 1-3 days.
- Provide counselling at the Midland Mental Health Walk in Clinic
- Community development, program planning and system advocacy related to improving the lives of persons with mental health needs.
- Regularly participate in agency, team and supervision meetings.
- Keeps up to date client records and program statistics as required by Georgian Bay General Hospital and by Wendat.
- Other duties as assigned by the Program Supervisor or Executive Director
