**Reports to**: Dr. Ciara Raudsepp-Hearne, Director of Key Biodiversity Areas

**Supervises**: N/A

**Position Summary**

WCS Wildlife Conservation Society Canada (WCS Canada) is a national, non-profit charitable organization established in 2004. Our mission is to save wildlife and wild places through science, conservation action, and inspiring people to value nature. WCS Canada’s Key Biodiversity Areas (KBA) program is seeking a diligent KBA Research Intern with a strong attention to detail and technical skills in coding and GIS to join a dynamic team on a national effort to identify places in Canada that contribute significantly to the persistence of biodiversity. KBA sites are identified in a collaborative manner, using a global quantitative and scientific standard that requires extensive research into species distributions, population sizes and biology. The goal of the KBA initiative is to create an open-access database of KBA spatial data and information, allowing conservation practitioners, governments, landowners, and Indigenous communities to make informed decisions about the management of these unique, and globally important sites. KBA data and information can help to inform conservation and land use planning, as well as planning around natural resource extraction or development, and can help inform various nature-based climate change solutions.

The KBA program is overseen by a coalition of partners including NGOs, academic scientists, governments and Indigenous communities. WCS Canada and the KBA initiative are committed to supporting Indigenous values and stewardship efforts, to respecting Indigenous knowledge, and to enabling informed participation of Indigenous Peoples throughout the KBA identification initiative.

The research intern’s role will focus on research, coding support, and geospatial support for the KBA program. They will operate, and help maintain, R and Python tools that ensure the accurate and timely flow of KBA information among partners and to the general public. They will contribute to the cleansing of geospatial KBA data using ArcGIS Pro. They will also assist with species and site research, develop and refine descriptions of sites and other KBA information, and generally support the identification and review of KBAs in Canada. The intern will join team meetings and meetings with partners to gain an understanding of biodiversity conservation approaches in Canada.

**Position Objectives**:
This position will support the WCS Canada KBA Program through the following primary objectives:

- Provide research, coding, and geospatial support to WCS Canada’s KBA Program;
- Gain experience and develop skills that will support the development of a long-term career in natural resources and conservation.

**Principal Responsibilities**:
Provide scientific and program support to staff and contractors in WCS Canada’s Key Biodiversity Areas program, including:

- Supporting the maintenance of these tools and underlying code, where needed
- Supporting quality control of KBA documentation
- Supporting organization of program information and files
- In ArcGIS Pro, participating in cleansing of geospatial KBA data.
- Research, i.e., literature searches and reviews, identification of experts and stakeholders through web searches, data sourcing and compilation, proposal writing and preparation.
- Support communication work to build awareness about Canadian biodiversity and KBAs.
- Providing input on research projects and KBA process

**Qualifications**
- Previous work experience/relevant experience (education) focused on environmental conservation, biodiversity conservation or other related fields.
- Diligent and a strong attention to detail.
- Experience with geospatial tools (ArcGIS Pro an asset) and coding in R and/or Python
