Land and water use planning are part of a suite of approaches that the Ministry can use to sustain important ecosystems and processes, resolve resource use issues and enhance certainty for environmental and economic goals. They are underpinned by socio-economic analyses, as well as assessment and monitoring of the condition of natural resource values.

Cumulative Effects are changes to environmental, social and economic values caused by the combined effect of past, present and potential future human activities and natural processes. The Land and Resource Specialist can be involved in a variety of provincial policy initiatives related to land use and natural resource management, playing a key role in their implementation and monitoring. The role offers an opportunity to advance reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, and can provide direction for forestry, energy development, water and ecosystem protection, recreation activities and other resource use decisions.
