**WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO DO IN THIS ROLE?**
You will:
- Interpret and portray the life, work skills, and activities of an 1860’s farmer/farm hand at Loucks’ Farm.
- Tend livestock (e.g., horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, oxen) and milk cows by hand.
- Cultivate and harvest crops using historical practices and techniques, including using horse-drawn machinery and equipment.
- Interpret village life and the features of a small rural 1860’s village.
- Provide visitors with information about structures, settings and activities throughout the site.
- Participate in the delivery and instruction of experiential youth programming.
- Act to ensure the safety of visitors and staff and protect the resources of the site.
- Embody the SLPC’s equity, diversity and inclusion principles while interacting with staff and guests.
**HOW DO I QUALIFY?**
MANDATORY:
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
You have:
- The knowledge and ability to perform a wide range of historical farming skills, e.g., hand-milking, adzing, binding grain, scything, working with horse-drawn machinery and equipment.
- Experience tending to and caring for a range of livestock (cattle, horses, oxen, sheep, pigs, poultry)
- Knowledge of agricultural history including historical farm equipment.
- An understanding of the social, economic, and political environment to a level typical of a farm worker of the 1860’s.
- The ability to perform the physical tasks associated with this position.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
You have:
- Strong oral communication skills to engage visitors in the interpretation of the work, skills and activities of an 1860’s farm worker and respond effectively to customer questions and concerns.
