**POSITION NOTES: 25 hours per week**

**TITLE: LABORATORY TECHNICIAN**

**DEPARTMENT: Secondary Schools**

**REPORTS TO: Science Department Head (functionally)**

**Principal (administratively)**

**SUMMARY**:
With minimum direction, the laboratory technician prepares and maintains laboratories and work areas for experiments and instruction as required by science teachers. She/he works cooperatively with other staff, students and the public.

**DUTIES**:

- Prepares laboratories for experiments and instruction as required by the science teachers.
- Maintains laboratory equipment and supplies and maintains records of inventory.
- Responsibility for transporting supplies and equipment from delivery area of school to the appropriate Science area in a timely manner.
- Prepares laboratory supply and equipment orders and assists with the selection of new items.
- Mixes solutions, stains and formulas as required by science teachers.
- Maintains or preserves animals or specimens.
- Cleans and repairs equipment as necessary or arranges for major repairs.
- Ensures security and safety in use of all chemicals and delicate and/or expensive items.
- Protects and nurtures biological specimens, growth of cultures and laboratory animals.
- Prepares records, lists, graphs, copies and related materials as required.
- Disposes of waste generated by laboratory experiments including, where necessary, treatment and packaging for waste pickup.
- Assists with department budget preparation and tracks expenditures.
- Maintains WHMIS information and updates files as new information is received.
- Participates on school committees as required.
- Assists teachers in laboratory and related activities.
- Coordinates and maintains science audio-visual and science related specialized computer equipment and related supplies.

**REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY, SKILLS** (Laboratory Technician)
- High-school diploma or equivalent.
- Two years of post secondary related training at the technical school level or equivalent training in a university setting with direct training and experience in the sciences with laboratory emphasis; or
- Four years of specific experience.
- Knowledge of laboratory practices and procedures.
- Basic record keeping skills.
- Ability to use courtesy and tact in the explanation of and discussion of information in contacts with public, parents, staff and students.
- Ability to perform individually and as part of a team.
- Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to plan and schedule work and organize the workload effectively.
- Ability to work with constant interruptions.

**TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED**
Laboratory equipment (eg. microscopes, balances, distillers), computer, photocopier, telephone, typewriter, audio visual equipment, (eg. micro-projector, overhead projector) and other office and laboratory related equipment.

**PHYSICAL ABILITIES**
- Sufficient vision to operate computer.
- Fundamental ability to operate equipment
- Manual dexterity.

**Job Type**: Part-time
Part-time hours: 25 per week

**Salary**: From $27.04 per hour
