Edmonton, Canada MS Canada Full time

**VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY**

**Friendly Visiting Volunteer**

**Program Description**

The Friendly Visiting Program is primarily designed to provide an informal support network for individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) living in long term care facilities. It is designed to increase awareness of community resources, engage individuals with MS in shared activities and (in some cases) provide a means of respite for caregivers.

**The Opportunity**

As a **Friendly Visiting Volunteer**, you will be responsible for coordinating all visits with the resident and long-term care home, and informing all parties as soon as possible in advance if you need to reschedule a visit. After each visit, recording the time you spent visiting and a brief note about what you did with the resident through your volunteer personal page. Your role is to visit with a resident at least twice per month to:

- Reduce social isolation among those aged 65 and younger
- Provide support, companionship, and appropriate activities to the resident (e.g., play a game, discover things that interest the resident)
- Share information about MS, MS Canada, and appropriate community resources
- Increase MS Canada’s awareness of the needs and issues of individuals living in continuing care
- Please note that if successful, this position will require the completion of a vulnerable sector check and may have additional onboarding requirements depending on the long-term care home you visit (e.g., TB testing, proof of immunization).

**Interested? Here’s what we’re looking for**:

- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- High level of reliability and responsibility
- Must be empathetic, supportive, and should be based in Edmonton, Calgary, or the surrounding communities
- Passion for supporting the MS Community
- Self-motivated and reliable; able to fulfill duties on time

**Time Commitment**:

- We request a one-year commitment for this role
- Onsite/virtual visits that typically occur 1 - 4 times per month, typically 1 hour in length
- Visit duration will vary depending on the resident and how they’re feeling that day
- Your first few visits may be shorter as you and the resident get to know each other

**Why Volunteer?**
- Gain valuable experience and skills by supporting program of a well-recognized organization while working with experienced organizing team members and comprehensive resources
- Contribute your time to an important cause and see your impact on the organization
- Obtain a reference letter
- Build a strong network and connect with the MS community
- ________________________________

MS Canada is dedicated to encouraging a supportive and inclusive culture where people from all backgrounds can thrive.

Our aim is to ensure that all those interested in joining our team are given equal opportunity and that our organization is representative of all sections of society. We encourage all qualified applicants to apply.

**Job Type**: Casual

**Benefits**:

- Flexible schedule

Application question(s):

- Are you aware that this is an unpaid, volunteer position?
- Are you able to travel to Long Term Care Homes in your area?

Work Location: In person
