Metlakatla Ferry Services has an opening for a permanent and full-time Deckhand. This position will assist the Skipper with the vessel start-up and shutdown, raising and lowering passenger loading ramps, ensuring that all onboard safety equipment is operating properly and vessels are clean, providing customer service to passengers and ensuring the safe onboarding and off-boarding of passengers and materials.

**Responsibilities**:
Your specific roles and responsibilities are as follows:

- Support the Skipper in the safe operation of four company-owned vessels, including passenger ferries, according to schedule, ensuring passengers and materials are transported safely (e.g., seniors, mothers with babies and equipment, etc.)
- Inspect and maintain onboard safety equipment on a daily basis to ensure safe operation
- Collect fares from passengers, develop a summary accounting and provide amounts collected to Gat Leedm.
- Secure vessels to the docks upon arrival and unsecure vessels upon departure and assists passengers in safely entering and exiting the vessels and properly operating onboard safety equipment as needed.
- Calculate total daily cash and credit sales, to ensure proper accounting for all fares.
- Order and purchase supplies as required, ensuring invoices are recorded and paid.
- Ensure vessels, dock and office are clean and presentable before and after runs.
- Perform pre-and post-trip checklist with each run including, but not limited to full maintenance (e.g., oil change, etc.).
- Ensure First Aid license is renewed as required.
- Track and report hours of work in a timely and accurate manner.
- Respond to questions and queries from passengers and community members.
- Be on time and be flexible with last-minute schedule changes due to illness, special trips, excursions, and other unforeseen circumstances.
- Secure the vessel during all weather conditions to prevent further damage.
- Practice safety drills with the skipper including but not limited to:

- Man overboard
- Mock distress radio call
- Emergency steering and anchoring
- First Aid
- Attend staff meetings as required.
- Maintain supplies on the vessel and in the shed.
- Satisfy and maintain Transport Canada safety requirements including Life Raft, correct equipment, etc.
- Perform other duties within the scope of the position, as assigned.

**Qualifications**:

- Minimum Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
- Basic knowledge of minor vessel maintenance.
- At least 1-year experience as a Deckhand or in a similar role.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- High level of ethics, integrity and strong customer service orientation.
- You are energetic and represent the Company professionally and courteously while playing a critical role in vessel operation and safety.
- SVOP and Marine Emergency Duties Certificate as required by Transport Canada.
- Basic First Aid Certificate as required to perform the job competently.
- Good mathematical skills.
- Punctual and regular, with excellent organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to operate within Transport Canada Guidelines.
- Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
- Adjust and be flexible to meet changing work needs and demands.
