Position Summary:
Hiring a McGill registered undergraduate student assistant (for a total of 80 hours) to support a collaborative project with the First Nations Information Governance Centre (FNIGC) on “Respecting and asserting First Nations Data Sovereignty Research Data Management”. This project is a collaborative
effort between FNIGC, six academic institutions, including McGill University, and multiple Inuit and First Nations governments and organizations.
Research data management (RDM) is a framework for actively organizing research data through a projects’ life cycle and involves the use of appropriate technology, infrastructure, policy, and standards of practice. When those data concern Indigenous communities and their members, any RDM systems or
plans must be developed to respect the data sovereignty of Indigenous nations.
This is a RA position to support a series of online virtual events. The successful incumbent will work as part of a remote team led by a PhD student in Information Sciences from Western University and the FNIGC project lead. The incumbent will also work alongside with other RAs, staff, researchers, and
representatives from a number of First Nations and Inuit organizations, universities and colleges. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated student to work with First Nations and Inuit governments and organizations in the important area of information governance and data sovereignty. Preference will be
given to First Nations, Inuit, and Metis undergraduate students registered at McGill.
N.B. This position will start on August 28th, 2023. Weekly hours may vary between 4 hours to 10 hours.
Primary responsibilities:
- Assist in the coordination of the project
- Take part in project training and orientation (e.g., guided background reading, research in Indigenous data sovereignty and TCPS2 Training)
- Note-taking, dialogue transcription, note collation with the team, and note revision with project participants
- Compile and summarize literature reviews related to Indigenous research protocols, methodologies and data governance.
Qualifications:
- Ability to extract and summarize relevant and accurate information during live events
- Ability to work collaboratively and professionally with multiple stakeholders
- Task-oriented and able to work autonomously
- Proficient in English - written and oral
- Strong communication skills - written and oral
- Equipped to work remotely (if needed)
- Must be a McGill registered undergraduate student
Experience and education:
- Knowledge of and experience working with Indigenous research data is highly desirable
- Prior knowledge of or experience in working with sensitive data is an asset
- Prior knowledge of research data management is an asset
“Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 3-4 (qualifier) on a scale of 0-4.”
