**Duties and Responsibilities**:
Under the direction of the Scientific Officer of the Department, the Superintendent is responsible for the operation of the Physics Department's instructional laboratories.

**Responsibilities include**:

- Plan organize and control the Department's instructional laboratory resources.
- Supervise and provide scientific support to approximately 30 Senior and Junior Demonstrators teaching in the laboratories.
- Assign and direct the activities of the technicians working in the laboratories.
- Plan develop and maintain facilities and equipment inventories for the laboratories.
- In consultation with academic staff, plans, develop and revise laboratory experiments and laboratory manuals.
- Ensure that the progress of the students enrolled in each laboratory section is monitored and reported.
- Provide training sessions to lab demonstrators
- Develops new experiments and writes manuals

**Qualifications**:
**The incumbent must possess the following qualifications**:

- Thorough knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of modern physics and of approaches and techniques used in physics experiments.
- Practical laboratory experience.
- Excellent knowledge of radiation and safety policy and procedures as they pertain to the safe environment of the laboratories
- Knowledge of computer software skills appropriate for the design and analysis of experiments
- Excellent organization skills; ability to determine priorities.
- Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
- Sound judgement, ingenuity, and resourcefulness
- Diplomacy; excellent interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills
- Supervisory experience.
- Ability to determine and allocate effectively and efficiently human and physical resources.
- Participate effectively as a team member
- Ability and initiative to keep up-to-date with current trends and development in the field.
- Qualified to obtain theWHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Identification System) certificate.

**Education and Experience**:
**The above is normally acquired through the completion of**:

- Master of Science in Physics or Engineering Physics, or equivalent
- Minimum three (3) years related experience, preferably in an educational environment.
