The Forest Improvement and Research Management Branch's mission is to protect, manage and conserve British Columbia's forest genetic resources through excellence in cone and seed services, research, tree breeding, decision support and client services. It provides critical support for the Chief Forester's office, and works to understand, protect, and conserve the genetic foundations of B.C.'s public forests. The Branch also manages information systems that track wild stand and orchard seedlots.
The Tree Seed Centre (TSC) processes, tests, registers, stores, and distributes seed used for Crown land reforestation. The TSC also safeguards the provincial seed supply and ensures adequate genetic diversity of tree seed used for reforestation. As well as being a processing and research facility, the TSC serves as the provincial cone and seed repository for the purposes of reforestation as well as an ex situ gene conservation bank. The TSC is the only repository of its kind in BC, and due to the highly valuable nature of its inventory, the TSC has been designated as “Mission Critical”.

**The Role**
As the Operations Technician, you are responsible for carrying out senior technical functions, as well as coordinating the standardization and documentation of operational processes and leading continuous improvement projects to streamline or improve operational processes in cone and seed processing and inventory management. This role demands sound judgement, adaptability, and initiative while working in a cooperative team environment.
**Qualifications**
- University degree or diploma in a related field such as forestry, natural resource sciences, agriculture, horticulture, botany or allied sciences plus a minimum of two years practical and related experience; or the equivalent combination of education and experience such as three years related resource environment experience and relevant job training courses.
- Demonstrated experience in a high volume production environment involving a perishable product and simultaneous technical activities.
- Valid BC Drivers Licence, forklift training certificate, valid level one first aid or the ability to obtain these.
- Working knowledge of conifer and deciduous seed anatomy, morphology, physiology, entomology and pathology.
**Proviso**
- Frequently lift and carry moderate weights for short distances with occasional use of ladders and stairs, and occasionally lift heavy weights (up to 25 kg) for short distances
