**Leadhand - Refuse Collection (Continuous)**

**POSITION FUNCTION**
Operate a single and/or tandem axle refuse packer and perform manual tasks in the collection of residential refuse and instruct crew performing similar functions.

**KEY DUTIES**
Coordinate, assign, review and participate in the work of two or more staff in the collection of residential refuse; ensure schedules, procedures and established performance and safety standards are met; provide employee training, orientation and input to employee performance appraisals; ensure daily route book and residence register is followed; complete time sheets.

Operate a single and/or tandem axle refuse packer vehicle following a prescribed route; transport crew and equipment to work sites; make frequent stops for the crew to load refuse; empty refuse load into garbage trailer as required.

Remove and dispose of refuse from residents by dumping totes and bags of refuse; collect and account for "extra refuse" tickets; clean up fallen refuse when loading using shovels and brooms; transfer refuse into truck hopper by operating hydraulic toter lift; operate hopper blade mechanism.

As required, Perform daily pre - and post-trip inspections of vehicle by checking items according to standard job procedures (such as fluid levels, belts, hoses and lights); check and adjust air brake system; report repairs needed and damage to supervisor and mechanic shop; check first aid and safety equipment.

Clean interior and exterior of vehicle as required; wash inside of packer body and buggies.

Respond to complaints and inquiries from property owners; provide property owners with written comments concerning bylaw infractions; relay job assignment information from supervisor to crew; keep records of residences which differ from residence register or contravene solid waste and recycling bylaws and deliver annual collection calendars.

Perform related duties where qualified.

**INDEPENDENCE**
Work is performed according to assigned daily schedule and register.
Work is reviewed by supervisor.
Problems such as unregistered residences are referred to supervisor.

**KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES**
Organize and prioritize the work of a unit.
Understand and carry out job related instructions.
Use basic hand tools.
Operate a tandem rear axle vehicle.
Complete forms accurately.
Direct the work of assistants.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.

**QUALIFICATIONS**
**Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification**:
Grade 10.
Current and valid Class 3 B.C. Driver’s Licence with air brake endorsement.
**Experience**:
2 years of experience in refuse collection.
or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

**OTHER**:
May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.

**Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm, 40 hour work week**
**$32.43 per hour, Pay Grade 6**
