Overview:
The Research Scientist - Microbiology, is primarily responsible for designing, undertaking and analyzing studies within the CORE Biosciences Lab related to microbiology. Research work will primarily be based on in vitro and ex vivo work but this position may also include involvement in clinical research projects. The incumbent is also responsible for providing support to other CORE members and visitors working in other fields of research undertaken by the CORE Biosciences lab, as well as for the general functioning, operation and maintenance of the lab.

**This position is contingent upon funding.**

**Responsibilities**:
Research
- Develops research initiatives and acts as Lead Investigator on industry and internally sponsored research projects using advanced scientific techniques and instrumentation, including selection of instrumentation, methodology and approach, and statistical planning
- Conducts research according to regulatory requirements and ensures that data collected are timely and accurate
- Develops and implements experimental design, techniques and procedures related to area of expertise
- Designs, tests, and validates data collection protocols, tools, and instruments, including problem solving and troubleshooting for area of expertise
- Collaborates with faculty, sponsors, fellow researchers, students, clinicians, and others involved in current lab-based studies
- Provides consultation on data collection and analysis methodologies for area of expertise
- Analyzes and presents research data to sponsors and/or at academic conferences
- Publishes work in high impact peer-reviewed academic journals.

Administration
- Assists with the onboarding and training of new and ongoing employees in the use of specific equipment and in the performance of various biochemical and laboratory procedures
- Participates in the hiring process of casual, co-op, interns, and summer students (with prior approval from Head of Biosciences)
- Participates as a member of the laboratory biosafety team, which includes following all regulations to maintain the biosafety permit in good standing, preparing, and partaking in annual safety reviews, including obtaining and maintaining proper documentation and ethics approval for work within the given area
- Assists with the implementation of lab safety and regulatory procedures and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) procedures
- Provides input into and/or supervises the day-to-day activities of students, including safety training, instructing, assisting, day-to-day troubleshooting, and documentation as required for laboratory equipment and advanced techniques
- Prepares and maintains standard operating procedures for lab techniques and SDS for lab chemicals and solutions for projects on which incumbent is Lead Investigator
- Assists with the stocking of lab supplies, consumables, etc., including ordering and shipping
- Assists with scheduling and maintenance of general lab equipment, including organization of service and repair
- Provides support and input with management of facilities, including maintaining and renovating of physical space
- Completes general lab housekeeping as assigned

Communication
- Keeps supervisor and other CORE personnel informed of relevant information pertaining to research
- Writes reports for supervisor and sponsors of relevant research material
- Communicates with the sponsor and relevant stake holders (both external and internal) of developments pertaining to the studies underway (e.g., achievement of progress markers, delays in data collection, etc.) and creates project deliverables
- Ensures high quality of deliverables through the preparation, presentation and dissemination of concise, accurate reports, fact sheets and other papers associated with the evaluation under study
- This includes presenting results (verbally and in writing) and making recommendations for further development of the program or initiative by synthesizing and transferring knowledge generated by the study in question
- Writes/edits scientific publications for accuracy, including data checking, interpretation, and presentation of results
- Conducts literature searches and reviews as needed, including consulting with other researchers in the field
- Writes, supports, and addresses responses to obtain Office of Research Ethics (ORE) approval where necessary

Finance
- Purchases supplies and chemicals needed to conduct research
- Recommends purchases for upcoming projects
- Assists with obtaining competitive quotes and arranging for purchase of equipment
- Arranges service contracts for required equipment
- Tracks spending on current projects and assists with the management of study budgets
- Orders and ships supplies, materials, consumables, and equipment as appropriate

Qualifications:

- Minimum of MSc in microbiology, or related field. Equivalent combination of education and
experience will be considered. A PhD would be an asset.
