**Athlete Academic Mentor**

**Overview**:
Athlete Academic Mentors provide one-on-one & group mentorship with student-athletes to assist them in developing academic skills as well as providing guidance through the role of “academic coach” using a variety of methods that will help the student-athlete with the process of setting and reaching goals.

**Qualifications**:

- Senior level student is preferred
- An overall sessional average of 8.0 or above (on McMaster’s 12.0 grading system) is required
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Must be empathetic to student needs
- High level of patience and a sincere desire to help others
- Be familiar with the University library, computer and other academic resource sites
- Be able to work both independently with little supervision and as part of a larger team.
- Academic Mentors must be majoring in the faculty, department, or course they wish to mentor.
- Past teaching experience is recommended
- Those interested in teaching, health education, or helping professions may find the experience valuable
- Current enrolment as a McMaster University student (full-time or part-time)
- A firm understanding of the McMaster Student Code of Conduct and FIPPA Guidelines
- Eligibility for McWork is an asset but not required

**Job Duties & Responsibilities**:

- Serve as a mentor to student-athletes to illustrate the importance of academics for athletes
- Hold one-on-one and group peer assistance appointments with student-athletes
- Assist student-athletes in developing good study skills and habits
- Demonstrate their knowledge of learning skills and strategies that have worked for him
- or herself
- Be punctual for each session and fill out an academic progress report for each session
- Adhere to McMaster University’s ethical academic behaviour
- Attend Mentor Orientation
- Meet with Athlete Services Coordinator when required.

**Notes**:

- All mentoring sessions will take place in the Bastable Resource Centre in the Ivor Wynne Centre.
