The Opportunity

The AER’s Compliance & Liability Management (CLM) branch is currently recruiting for the position of Student, Inspector to join our team in Field Operations Northeast. This inspector will be responsible for a variety of compliance assurance activities but will primarily consist of field inspections and associated follow up with industry representatives. Inspection scope may include surveillance of facilities, wells, public lands, water management and protection, but may also include other inspection capacities based on the needs of the team and the opportunities available.
The AER ensures the safe, efficient, orderly, and environmentally responsible development of oil, oil sands, natural gas, and coal resources over their entire life cycle. Inspectors at the AER have the opportunity to represent the interests of all Albertans in ensuring regulatory compliance of the upstream Oil & Gas industry.

Your Key Responsibilities:

- Conduct and/or support inspections on operations and activities within the AER’s jurisdiction, including:

- Preparing inspection plans.
- Collecting and analyzing information from varied and numerous sources to determine compliance, resolve problems and make recommendations to improve operational practices.
- Prepare and enter inspection reports.
- Perform follow up action as required or forward the non-compliance items for possible enforcement action to an investigator.
- Follow and support all planning and reporting activities in alignment with AER policies, procedures, the Compliance Assurance Program, and Branch Operational Plan. Work with other team members to meet the objectives of the Compliance Assurance Program.
- As a representative of AER in the field, field inspectors will adhere to all safety procedures, complete field site hazard assessments, follow PPE protocols, follow safe driving practices as per the fleet vehicle policy, represent the AER with internal and external stakeholders, collaborate with the health & safety team, and understand and follow best practices when acting as a lone worker.

Qualifications:

- Currently enrolled in an engineering, environmental, or other related diploma or degree program
- Be able to drive prolonged distances
- Able to conduct light physical activity such as climbing stairs, ladders, and walk around industrial sites in all types of conditions
- Able to work in all weather conditions
- Ability to operate ATV is an asset, but not required

Additional Requirements and Information:

- Proof of enrollment in a registered institution will be a condition of hire.
- Pre-placement Medical required.
- Possess a fully valid driver’s license along with a positive driving record. The word "fully" describes the criteria for a class 5 as opposed to a graduated license, and "positive driving record" as defined in the AER driving policy.
- Must be able to lift over 30 lbs.
- In order to perform their jobs safely, persons employed as drivers require acceptable vision and an appropriate driver's license.
- First Aid and H2S Alive, and Driver Training are considered assets, but are not required prior to hiring date.
- Position is approximately 50/50 split between office and field work. Overnight trips are possible, but not common.

- Flexible work hours, while committing to being available during our core hours of 9:00am - 3:00pm

If you choose to participate in the hybrid model, you will:

- Be provided with an AER computer or laptop when working in the office.
- Need to have access to a personal computer when working from home (unless assigned an AER laptop - dependant on business need).
- Have a high-speed internet connection with a minimum of 50 Mbps for downloads and 30 Mbps for uploads when working remotely.
