As a member of the healthcare interdisciplinary team the Medical Laboratory Assistant - Team Leader at Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) is responsible for the normal daily functioning of the Laboratory Department, including the Specimen Collection Center (SCC). This position is responsible for the design, implementation and continual improvement of the Quality Management System in the Laboratory and SCC.

Job Requirements:
As an integral member of the Laboratory team the Medical Laboratory Assistant - Team Leader’s responsibilities include but are not limited to:

- Supervising, organizing, assigning, and distributing workload among technical staff to ensure the efficient operation of the laboratory Specimen Receiving area.
- Performing laboratory procedures as outlined in the procedure manuals for the discipline - specific functions.
- Ensuring the maintenance of quality assurance and equipment within assigned area of the laboratory.
- Maintaining an inventory management system for the efficient utilization and distribution of laboratory equipment and supplies.
- Maintaining a system for detecting, documenting, and reporting discrepancies/errors and taking appropriate action(s) as required.
- Development, implementation, and maintenance of new and/or revised procedures, protocols, and performance standards in collaboration with Supervisor, Manager and Laboratory Clinical Director.
- Assessing technical staff regarding performance and maintaining competency of specific discipline
- Liaising with other Laboratory and RVH staff, external laboratories, hospitals and physician’s offices
- Maintaining Accreditation Canada Diagnostics (ACD) compliance writing new/revised procedures, maintain changes/updates and communicate these to the appropriate MLA staff.
- Coordinating MLA representation on the Laboratory Operations Committee or other committees/meetings, as needed.
- Coordinating initial and refresher training for new and current staff
- Participating in staff and patient experience and feedback initiatives, professional development, teaching/ educational activities, safety, and quality improvement programs to ensure excellence in the provision of services.
- Observing and understanding GBGH and departmental policies and procedures, adhering to GBGH and departmental mission and vision statements while maintaining patient confidentiality.
- Updating and maintaining LIS dictionary for specific discipline.
- Performing other related duties consistent with the job classification, as assigned, requested, or required.

**Required**:

- Medical Laboratory Technician Certification or equivalent
- Certified Medical Laboratory Assistant.
- Active membership and participation in associated societies, user or peer groups required.
- Effectively perform venipuncture and ECG on adult and paediatric patients.
- Experience and knowledge of Quality Systems (IACD, CAP, ISO).
- Experience with system auditing.
- Ability to work with automation and to perform maintenance, specimen preparation, specimen loading and other laboratory duties under the guidance of a technologist.
- Knowledge of Laboratory Safety.
- Commitment to providing an exceptional experience for staff and clients within a challenging and exciting health care environment.
- Demonstrated strong communication skills both written and verbal.

- Demonstrated ability to prioritize, organize and multi-task.
- Demonstrated project management skills.

- Demonstrated computer skills in Word, Excel, Power Point and Surge.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently or in a team environment.
- Demonstrated ability to problem solve, inspire ideas, and empower staff.
- Demonstrated commitment to continued professional and personal growth and development through continuing education programs and self-directed learning opportunities.
- Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history

**Additional Information**:

**Number of Positions Available**:1

**Hours of Work**: Permanent Full Time. Must be available to work shifts including days, evenings, nights, and weekends. Shifts and hours may change according to departmental requirements and as per the OPSEU collective agreement.

**Salary**:$33.00 - $37.69 an hour.
