**PROGRAM DESCRIPTION**

The Forensic Housing and Outreach Program provides housing and outreach supports to individuals who are dealing with a severe mental illness and who have offended. The program serves those in the Nanaimo area, as well as Courtenay, Comox, Campbell River, and Powell River. All files are referred by the Nanaimo Forensic Outpatient Clinic and by Forensic Psychiatric Services in the North Island. The program is voluntary and collaborative in nature, combining the client, the community, and a holistic outlook. We provide safe and supportive housing and help facilitate our client's transition back into the community on an independent basis. We encourage healthy lifestyle choices and social responsibility.

**ROLE PURPOSE**

The North Island Forensics Outreach Worker is a dynamic and independent role within the Forensics Program. This position assists individuals who are referred to the program by Forensic Psychiatric Services focused on the Comox Valley and North Island region. All individuals referred to the program have a persistent and severe mental illness and active involvement in the criminal justice system or Review Board Status. Challenges faced by the individuals can include a mental health and addictions, daily living skills, housing stability, recidivism, community engagement and other social determinants of health. The work varies based on the particular needs of the service recipient; and based on referral goals. This position is well suited to a strong, self-directed individual who enjoys significant regular interaction with individuals.

Under the supervision and direction of the Forensic Program Manager, this position participates in program development, implementation and evaluation strategies and acts as an identified contact for other professionals and participant employers.

**LOCATION**

Comox Valley/North Island, BC

**HOURS**

**Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week (Full Time).**

**COMPENSATION**

$24.00 - $25.50 / hour - depending on skills and experience

**KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES**

1. Ensure that the program is conducted in a manner that promotes and ensures the safety of all clients and the community

2. Conduct an intake assessment with each client in order to assess the needs of the client and to determine appropriate intervention in collaboration with the Forensics Case Manager

3. Participate, as part of an interdisciplinary team, in client centred treatment planning

4. Mentor individuals to encourage pro-social behaviors

5. Role model behavioral expectations of dress, daily work habits, interpersonal communication, positive attitudes, temperament, emotional self-management and adherence to facility rules

6. Assist clients with daily living needs to include housing, clothing, nutrition and related supports

7. Work with clients one-on-one and in small group settings (where appropriate) to develop life skills, work skills and social supports

8. Ensure that the ongoing mental health, physical health and legal issues of clients are addressed

9. Collaborate with appropriate community resources to develop ways to meet identified needs

10. Adhere to professional guidelines with respect to client confidentiality

11. Endeavour to keep abreast of issues, information and education related to the position

12. Attend appropriate staff training sessions

**WORKING CHALLENGES (OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY)**

There can be frequent exposure to adverse environmental working conditions. These can include verbal and physical aggression, which require safety precautions and a calm perspective in approaching the situation. There is an expectation of a moderate level of physical exertion in daily living activities, recreation opportunities, vocational rehabilitation and dealing with unusual behavioral situations.
