Outdoor Summer Camp Counsellor

The Ottawa River Canoe Club (ORCC) is looking for four (4) enthusiastic people to work as Summer Camp Counsellors for the ORCC Junior Canoe Kids (6 & 7-year-olds), Canoe Kids (8-11 year-olds), and Youth Paddling (11-14-year-olds) Camps. The role will include running an organized and balanced day for campers, including traditional camp experiences, paddle sports, and other diverse organized sports activities.
- The Ottawa River Summer Camps provide a fun camp environment for children and youth to learn fundamental canoe and kayak skills and to encourage a lifelong interest in paddling and outdoor activities. All ORCC Summer Camps are designed to allow campers to paddle and socialize with their friends in a fun team environment. Campers develop water safety awareness and paddling skills while increasing their confidence on the water. The camp day also includes active and engaging on-land games, crafts, and discovery time, with an overall focus on summer fun _
**Essential Qualifications** (must be able to demonstrate through references):
- Must be aged 16+ to work at camp
- Enthusiasm and willingness to learn
- Outstanding communication and collaboration skills
- Exemplary organization skills.
- Vulnerable Sector Check* for applicants over 18, a minimum of 2 personal references for applicants under 18*
- Ontario Pleasure Craft Operators Card*, CPR-C, AED, and Standard First Aid*, Coaching Association of Canada; National Coaching Certification Program; Sprint Canoe Kayak Community Sport Trained*; Safe Sport Trained*
**Assets**:
- Previous job experience in the proximity of water (swimming, paddling, water-skiing, etc.).
- Previous job experience as a camp counselor
- National Lifeguard certification
- Previous paddling experience
- Experience teaching fundamental movement skills
**Duties**:
- Together with the rest of the camp counselors, introduce the campers to the basics of a recreational canoe, kayak, and other paddle sports.
- Ensure all staff and campers are following safety measures by reinforcing safety rules, following daily safety procedures, and having an exceptional understanding of the safety protocols in place.
- Work collaboratively with the team and volunteers to ensure all camp logistics are in place and the programs are delivered flawlessly.
- Follow basic guidelines for Canoe Kids Camp programs developed by Canoe Kayak Canada and the ORCC Head Coach.
- Supervise participants in all aspects of camp: swim assessment, canoeing, kayaking, dragon boating, games, field trips to the beach, crafts, and pre and post-camp care.
- Promote and encourage sport in a fun and safe environment.
- Teach children physical literacy and fundamental movement skills in a fun camp atmosphere.
**Term: June 27th to August 30th, 2024, **with additional training days in the evening and on the weekends in May and June (virtual and in-person).
**Hours: ~8:00 to 4:00 PM, Monday to Friday **(except long weekends)
**Salary: $16.55/ hour, **depending on experience and qualifications

Contract length: 2 months
**Salary**: $16.55-$18.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
