This role is a hybrid role and location will be Markham or Oakville.

What you will do:

- Provide coaching, mentoring and training to a team of Commercial Lines underwriters to further develop their underwriting capabilities for the business.
- Assist with the underwriting of a portfolio of assigned business, and provide support to the underwriting team on complex accounts.
- Communicates with brokers on Aviva's strategy, field calls from brokers, Aviva lawyers, Aviva claims team.
- Provides technical expertise to internal stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain relationships cross-functionally and with external stakeholders, to deliver exceptional broker and customer service.
- Act as a point of escalation for all underwriters.
- Assists VP with individual branch strategy and portfolio diversification.
- Provides technical analysis and evaluates technical skills for new hires and promotions on authority levels and work assignment
- Expert on our wordings representing UW for Aviva.
- Authorize risks within own established authority levels.
- Maintain the quality and profitability of a portfolio through analysis and recommendations for improvement, and refer all risks outside established authority level to AVP.
- Act as a liaison on referrals and specific underwriting issues with CTU.
- Liaise with CTU on training and development needs of staff as well as creation and implementation of appropriate technical guidelines.
- Work in conjunction with Business Development to pursue growth opportunities.
- Contribute to the introduction and communication of pricing, coverage and/or product changes on time, including creating underwriter bulletins, contributing to the development of underwriting guidelines, procedures, and manuals.
- Participate in Underwriting Quality Reviews and provide feedback and training potential as required.
- Monitor and control UQR on a monthly basis.
- Review large losses and identify underwriting miss and respective coaching opportunities.
- Support maintenance of a compliant UW environment in relation to filed rates and rules.
- Maintain knowledge of industry trends, developments, and regulatory changes.
- Identify gaps in underwriting capabilities, and design and deliver solutions.
- Conduct and lead monthly UW meetings; present topics.
- Deliver and implement new product coverage.
- Potentially handle large special account or new business.
- Orientation to new hires on Aviva UW appetite and philosophies; active participant of new hire onboarding.

What you will bring:

- Post-secondary education (Business or related discipline)
- CIP/FCIP preferred
- 8-10 years’ experience in underwriting, preferably in Commercial Insurance
- Excellent leadership and coaching skills with the ability to develop expertise in the branch.
- Expert knowledge of underwriting, pricing and product in key segments, i.e. Wholesaling, Manufacturing and/or Contractors
- A proven decision maker and expert negotiator with sound judgement, accompanied with ability to take well calculated risks.
- Strong level of understanding of underwriting philosophy, policy contracts, rating programs, risk information sources, underwriting/technical manual information, statuary constraints, and computer workflow procedures.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, RTM, Commercial systems and other related systems.
- Ability to interact in a professional manner to develop long-term relationships with brokers and customers.
- Ability to work with and positively influence internal business partners to deliver a great broker and customer experience.
- Ability to be self-motivated and proactively pursue potential business opportunities with brokers and customers.
- Ability to listen to broker and customer needs in order to effectively and efficiently meet them.
