**Department/Unit Description**:
The Faculty of Health Sciences’ (FHS) Health Research Services (HRS) team provides leadership, counsel, and fundamental services to the health research community. These efforts help ensure the eligibility of McMaster’s research community as a whole to obtain health research funding from Federal and Provincial governments and other funding agencies and sponsors by ensuring compliance with internal and external regulation and policies particularly in terms of human and animal research ethics, biohazard and environmental regulation. The result is a maximal share of available project and program funding for McMaster’s health researchers.

**Job Summary**:
The Agreements Officer is responsible for drafting, negotiating, and finalizing complex agreements between the University and external sources.

**Purpose and Key Functions**:

- Draft and negotiate complex agreements for final approval and execution by authorized University officials ensuring compliance will all appropriate University, stakeholder, and government policies and regulations.
- Advise and assist faculty members with the preparation of budgets where agreements will subsequently be required.
- Write opinions regarding the advisability of execution of legal agreements for review by internal clients including faculty members and senior administration.
- Explain and defend University policies in an effort to facilitate agreements between internal and external clients and collaborators.
- Plan and coordinate meetings with internal and external clients.
- Seek the advice of colleagues with regards to more complex matters such as intellectual property, commercialization, indemnification and insurance language that may be required in agreements.
- Remain current with frequent changes to copyright law, funding patterns and opportunities, and regulations and restrictions.
- Interpret insurance and indemnification policies and international laws and treaties.
- Identify intellectual property and potential liabilities that may exist.
- Deliver presentations on University policies and processes as they relate to agreements.
- Monitor agreements and accounts through to project completion to ensure that the University and other parties meet their legal obligations.
