Campus Life & Engagement

Campus Life & Engagement (CL&E) supports all McGill students by connecting them to resources and creating meaningful opportunities for involvement. They guide students in navigating the McGill student experience through orientation and transition programming and by providing student life opportunities across campus for students to develop their interests and skills.

Position Summary:
The incumbent contributes to planning and implementation of the Campus Life and Engagement (CL&E) strategic directions and ensuring that programming meets the larger goals and strategic directions of Student Life and Learning (SLL). Plans and implements orientation activities, from pre-arrival to arrival to campus for undergraduate and graduate students. Promotes and facilitates year-round and ad hoc programming targeting first-year undergraduate and graduate students focused on fostering a sense of community and belonging with other departments/Faculties.

Annually, reviews student priority needs to refine, develop, and implement new student programming, in collaboration with other SLL units, faculties, and other campus partners. The portfolio includes the development of effective working relationships with targeted campus partners to maximize student outreach and support with a view of ensuring efficient use of Student Life and Learning resources. Guides students to address their needs and connect them to the appropriate resources and provides input on the social media engagement & annual action plans to accompany first-year students’ transition and well-being. Stays abreast of the sector’s best practices and contributes to ongoing quality improvement initiatives and data collection. There is close collaboration with the CL&E Student Involvement and Community Connections team.

Primary Responsibilities:

- Plan and organize orientation activities from pre-arrival to arrival, both virtual and in-person, in collaboration with Faculties and other student life and learning units ensuring student support for their transition.
- Promote year-round collaborative, high-impact student life initiatives based on student and university needs, successful practices, and current research in higher education.
- Design and implement in-person and online education and training programs for students to respond to students needs as needed. Facilitate or co-facilitate workshops to promote a successful university transition whose purpose bears in mind the life cycle and specific needs of a first-year student.
- Promote and support outreach efforts to engage and facilitate transition, integration and academic support of new students. Connect them with the appropriate Student Life and Learning units; provide referrals to on-campus resources as needed.
- Support and enhance campus peer and mentorship programs at McGill and foster a supportive and engaged campus community.
- Collaborate with campus and community partners in the design and delivery of comprehensive, inclusive, sustainable programs and opportunities for students based on identified needs of underrepresented student populations, and broader student needs.
- Support Orientation volunteer training to ensure smooth implementation of events.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

Demonstrated experience in a post-secondary institution with a proven record of understanding student needs and translating that understanding into clear student-centered implementations and programming. Team player, proven ability to take responsibility and deliver results with minimum direction and oversight. Able to work autonomously and as part of a team in a fast-paced high volume and deadline-oriented environment, remaining composed under pressure and contributing to a sense of team. Demonstrated problem solving, decision-making and organizational skills with a proven ability to manage multiple activities and projects at the same time. Adhere to change management and quality improvement processes. Proficiency in crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques is a strong asset. Content and project management expertise is strongly preferred. Ability to initiate, develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with university stakeholders; identify the expertise and added value of partners’ contributions, and opportunities to leverage them to meet the objectives of the Unit. Student-focused and service-oriented with a demonstrated ability to build constructive and effective relationships with all levels of staff, students and the public. Professionalism and excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills are essential. Experience delivering workshops/webinars/groups incorporating the use of technology; excellent presentation, communication and interviewing skills.
