Child Care Cook

The Family Centre (Wallaceburg & Area Parent and Preschool Program Inc) requires a cook to start immediately.

Nature and Scope

The Child Care Cook is responsible to plan, budget, shop, prepare and serve balanced meals and snacks that meet the nutritional and medical needs of children. The cook oversees all kitchen operations, maintains safe, clean and sanitary facilities, and ensures safe food preparation, storage and disposal in accordance with accepted food handling practices, food safety regulations and child care food guidelines.
The Cook supports the Centre's philosophy, programs, and policies to maintain a standard of care that contributes to the Centre’s reputation for excellence.

Salary and Work Schedule

Monday through Friday, approx. 25 hours/week

Cook Starting Salary $16.35/per hour

**Responsibilities**:

- Knowledge of food preparation and nutrition in order to prepare quality lunches and snacks for children
- Creates menus following Canada's Food Guide in conjunction with the Centre Supervisor/Director
- Shops for food and food supplies on a weekly basis, while ensuring compliance with the established budget
- Delivers hot meals to other locations for PA days and summer
- Knowledge of legislation as it pertains to Food and Nutrition Standards, food safety regulations, fire inspection, and Health and Safety
- Creates and maintains records of all food-related purchasing, inventory, and turnover; estimates requirements and expenses
- Maintains accurate, timely, and complete records for menus, temperatures, controls, child allergies, etc.
- Works as a member of a professional team by creating partnerships with colleagues and volunteers, participating in centre meetings, and following policies and procedures
- Assists in ensuring the overall health and safety of children enrolled in the program by maintaining a sanitary and safe, organized environment and preparing meals within safe food preparation guidelines
- Communicates effectively with co-workers, children, and parents
- Proactive, organized, flexible, patient, professional, prompt, and reliable attendance at work
- Collaborates with colleagues, sharing expertise and practical knowledge
- Assists teachers in the classroom to help cover breaks as required

**Qualifications**:

- Food Handling certificate from the municipal health department
- Experience in food preparation and serving
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs on a regular basis and able to stand for extended periods of time
- Valid Driver’s License and liability insurance
- Current First Aid Certificate and Current Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certificate an asset
- Proven flexibility, cooperation, and willingness to share ideas and knowledge to enhance team-building

Schedule:

- Day shift
- Monday to Friday
- No weekends

Licence/Certification:

- Food Safe, SafeCheck, Food Handler or equivalent (preferred)
