**Position Profile**:
The Wildlife Care Assistant position offers an opportunity to develop your skills while making a positive impact on the local wildlife. You will be working closely with our hospital team to provide care for the youngest patients. Responsibilities will include feeding, cleaning, observation and detailed record-keeping. This role is a great opportunity to work in a fast-paced environment and learn more about natural history and wildlife rehabilitation.

**Wage**:
$16.75 per hour

**Duration**:
Wildlife Care Assistant - Canada Summer Jobs is a seasonal contract position (approximately 32 hours/week for a period of 8 to 16 weeks). Exact hours and length of placements are not known until granted and announced by the Canada Summer Jobs program. The 2024 Canada Summer Jobs program will run from April 22nd to August 31st, 2024.

You are an enthusiastic, goal-driven team-player with career aspirations in veterinary medicine, conservation, or similar discipline that is not afraid of hard work and getting your hands dirty. You are interested in leveraging your unique talents to support the success of Wildlife Rescue’s Nestling and Fledgling program and care for the diverse variety of juvenile birds that are admitted to our hospital every spring and summer.

Established in 1979, Wildlife Rescue Association of BC is a leader in the rehabilitation of wild animals and is committed to educating the public on how to coexist peacefully with wildlife. Located in Burnaby, BC, we are western Canada’s busiest wildlife rehabilitation centre, with over 5,000 animal patients admitted each year.

The Wildlife Rescue Association of BC is located on the ancestral and unceded homelands of the hən̓ q̓ əmin̓ əm̓ and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh speaking peoples. We are grateful for the opportunity to be on this beautiful, shared territory.

**Highlight of Key Responsibilities**:

- Provide day to day care for nestling and fledgling songbirds (including hand feeding, cleaning, and handling), juvenile gulls, ducklings and goslings
- Keep detailed records and observations on the nestlings and fledglings in care
- Setup and clean habitats
- Create and maintain enrichment
- Diet preparation
- Assist with volunteer and staff training
- Conduct daily observations and communicate concerns to senior staff

**Key Qualifications & Experience**:

- Previous animal handling experience, an asset
- Excellent communication, organization, and time management skills
- Ability to prioritize and problem-solve
- Willingness to take initiative and work independently
- Open availability (evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays)

**To be eligible for a Canada Summer Jobs opportunity, youth must meet the following criteria**:

- Applicants must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period;
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection applies, and;
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number and be legally entitled to work in Canada
