In this position, you will work alongside K-6 colleagues to enhance success for First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FMNI) students by supporting academic achievement, providing literacy and reading strategies, facilitating cultural arts programming and transitions to junior high. One of the primary goals in this position is to reduce barriers to achievement for Indigenous students through a collaborative solutions-focused perspective and build positive relationships with students, families and community. You will work alongside colleagues to naturalize Indigenous knowledge and understanding throughout the school by supporting school wide initiatives, including in class curriculum support, event management and logistics for cultural programming.
This position works under the Indigenous Learning Services department but will be located at Our Lady of Peace School.
**Responsibilities**:
- Deliver individualized and group literacy, academic mentoring, life skills and tutoring activities.
- Support students not reading at grade level.
- Provide interventions for small groups.
- Coordinate reading volunteers.
- Support family reading strategies.
- Liaise with various community partners to provide a wide range of mentoring strategies including literacy supports.
- Deliver creative experiences to engage Indigenous students in school.
- Facilitate cultural arts groups and extra-curricular activities such as dance and drumming.
- Facilitate student leadership groups and the delivery of social justice projects.
- Collaborate with feeder schools and facilitate transitions to Junior High.
- Provide Transition to 7 workshops and access to feeder schools.
- Liaise with feeder schools to ensure all transitioning students have adjusted to the new school.
- Establish and maintain positive rapport with parents and caregivers.
- Establish relationships with students through modelling, mentoring, advocating and one-on-one meetings.
- Connect individual students and their parents/guardians with community organizations and programs.
- Engage families to participate in their child’s learning.
- Liaise with business and community agencies to connect individual students with mentors.
- Provide support and outreach to parents/guardians of at-risk students.
- Collaborate with colleagues to support reconciliation by supporting school wide initiatives, including in class curriculum support, event management and logistics for cultural programming.
- Work to create culturally responsive environments by ensuring Indigenous students see culture and Indigenous Ways of Knowing represented.
- Conduct assessments and generate reports.
- Track the progress of individual students and subgroups as they progress.
- Conduct and analyze on-going formative and summative evaluation data of program effectiveness.
- Provide and/or submit reports to the manager.
- Maintain technical knowledge through a range of professional development activities.
**Qualifications**
- Degree or diploma in Native Studies, Education or related area, plus three years of directly related experience.
- Knowledge of Indigenous culture; fluency in Cree is an asset.
- Working knowledge of appropriate strategies for reducing behaviours that put students at risk of not graduating from high school.
- Knowledge of and the ability to analyze data.
- An understanding of the multiplicity of social services available in the community to support at-risk students.
- Knowledge of alternative education opportunities and an in-depth understanding of the junior high school curriculum.
- Knowledge of records management including FOIP Legislation.
- Knowledge of safe workplace practices and an understanding of Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
- General knowledge of the Division/department operations, business, program, goals and objectives.
- Advanced problem-solving skills and the ability to assess needs of various stakeholders and make appropriate referrals.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide-range of individuals.
