**Minds in Motion Facilitator - Temporary Contract (8 weeks, 2 hrs/week)**
The Alzheimer Society of Durham Region (ASDR) is a community support service organization that provides programs and services to people living with dementia and their care partners in Durham Region. We work closely with other service providers to ensure quality care and support for our clients to achieve our mission to improve the quality of life of people living with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia and their care partners.
We employ administrative and fund development staff, educators, social workers, social service workers, nurses, occupational therapists, recreation staff, and volunteers who work together as a team to meet the needs of people living with dementia and their care partners.

Under the direction of the ASDR Active Living Coordinator, the Minds in Motion Facilitator will be responsible for the delivery of the weekly Minds in Motion (“MIM”) program which includes facilitating the fitness component of the program.
What you will be doing
**Responsibilities**:
- Coordinates, implements, and leads a two-hour social recreation program designed to meet the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional needs of older adults and persons living with dementia and their care partners including one-hour of physical fitness and one-hour of social recreation activities
- Abides by ASDR’s program policies and procedures
- Completes program attendance for participants and volunteers within 24 hours of each session
- Includes the following components during fitness class; warm up, cardiovascular portion, balance, strength training, stretching and cool down
- Transports all required social recreation & fitness materials and assists with set up and take down of the fitness program
- Dress in proper attire for a leader of a fitness class; clean, tidy, and demonstrating adequate coverage
- Provision of low volume lyric-free music (ideally) and music suited to each exercise segment
- Collaborates with program volunteers to assist in the delivery of the MIM program
- Facilitation of a fun, safe social environment conducive to group cohesion and relationship building
- Assists with program evaluation in conjunction with the Active Living Coordinator
- Participation in ASDR orientation and training
**Relationships**
The Minds in Motion Facilitator works as part of a multi-member team and has working relationships with Active Living Coordinator, Active Living Manager, and Volunteer Coordinator. They also maintain working relationships with clients, donors, professional colleagues, and community partners.
What you will bring along
Education
- Postsecondary degree/diploma in recreation/activation or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education, training, and expertise
- DICE (Dementia-Inclusive Choices for Exercise) Training is required
Experience
- Two years’ experience facilitating fitness programs for seniors
Other Knowledge, Skills, Abilities or Certifications
- Current First Aid and CPR certification
- Clear criminal record check including Vulnerable Sector Check; conducted no more than 1 month prior to commencement of contract
- Possess personal qualities of tact, discretion, maturity
- Demonstrated leadership, organizational, time management and coordination skills
- Ability to work effectively with volunteers
- Superior communication skills, verbal, written and interpersonal skills
- Shows initiative, flexibility, and resourcefulness
- Demonstrates above average problem-solving abilities
- Works well as part of a team and is also able to set individual priorities
- Bilingualism considered an asset
- Flexible with the ability to work some evenings or weekends
Travel Requirements
- Valid Ontario Driver’s license and insured vehicle available to travel throughout Durham Region
Physical Demands
- Ability to run fitness program for 45-60 minutes in length
- Assist with arrangement of furniture (tables/chairs)
- Carrying/distributing exercise equipment (e.g. weights) and other program supplies
