As an installation technician, your responsibility will include installing a variety of mobile radio communications equipment in motor vehicles in the Communications Group shop and at customer sites. You will need to diagnose minor communication system problems, and repair or replace malfunctioning equipment. Perform related duties as assigned.
**Responsibilities**
- Install and/or remove electronic equipment (e.g., two-way radios, CB radios, cellular telephones, hands-free kits, AVLs, boosters, etc.) in customer vehicles using air, power and hand tools, along with technical information and shop service procedures.
- Build special components to accommodate the installation of necessary equipment in vehicles (e.g., car harnesses, brackets for radio equipment, etc.).
- Troubleshoot malfunctions of electronic equipment and installations in vehicles in order to diagnose and correct operational problems.
- Repair electronic equipment and installations in vehicles to restore equipment installations to optimal operating conditions.
- Operate installed equipment in order to test or demonstrate equipment.
- Perform regularly scheduled maintenance and repairs on vehicle communications equipment installations in order to ensure maximum reliability and performance using solvents, lubricants, tools and technical manuals.
- Make minor repairs to shop equipment to maintain performance.
- Document all equipment installations and repairs performed, recording work completed on appropriate work orders.
- Clean assigned work area in order to eliminate hazards.
- Operate vehicles, moving them into and out of the shop in order to perform work functions.
- Occasionally travel to customer sites to install equipment in vehicles at their location.
- Recommend changes in shop operations or procedures in order to expedite repairs and installations of vehicle equipment.
- Fabricate wiring harnesses to specifications for installation into vehicles.
- Attend all monthly safety meetings, adopting safe work practices on the job daily
**Knowledge of**:
- the basic principles of electronics and electronic mobile communications equipment, such as two-way radios, CB’s, cellular telephones, hands-free kits, AVLs, boosters, etc.
- provincial and federal environmental laws concerning the handling of hazardous materials routinely used in fleet service operations
Skill in:
- the operation of motorized vehicles (e.g. automobiles, trucks, and motor homes) for transport
- identifying and using proper hand and power tools, parts and supplies in a safe manner
- calculating mathematical problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division on a calculator to determine measurements, time, quantities, metric conversion, repair costs, and parts and supplies expenditures
- the safe use of fleet shop equipment (e.g., bench grinder, drill press, etc.)
Ability to:
- follow detailed oral and written instructions in the installation/removal and repair of electronic mobile communications equipment.
- read and interpret dials, gauges, meters, graphs and electrical wiring diagrams pertaining to the installation, testing, operation and repair of mobile communications equipment.
- install, repair or remove vehicle equipment by assembling or disassembling, repairing or replacing parts and components.
- modify a vehicle (vehicle build-up) by assisting in the fabrication and installation of special parts and equipment.
- effectively communicate orally and in writing.
- explain technical information in layman's terms to service users and other personnel to answer questions and provide information about equipment and its operation.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of assignment.
- make routine decisions without direct supervision pertaining to the installations and repair of mobile communications equipment.
- read and comprehend technical shop manuals, troubleshooting guides, manufacturers' specifications, warranties, parts catalogs and work orders used in the installation and repair of electronic mobile communications equipment.
- differentiate between colors to work with electrical wires
**Working Conditions/Physical Requirements**:
- May be required to stoop, bend, kneel and squat for extended periods of time.
- May be required to carry items weighing up to 30 pounds over short distances
- May be exposed to outdoor weather conditions and moderate to loud noise levels.
