**Job Description**:
In keeping with the Mission Statement of the hospital and in conjunction with an ophthalmologist, the orthoptist is responsible for examining, aiding in the diagnosis, and treatment of visual system dysfunction involving vision, eye movement, eye alignment, and binocularity. The orthoptist assigned to this position is required to function independently and as a member of the Ophthalmology Team in order to provide an integrated approach to family focussed and evidence-based care.
This position involves responsibilities both at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and at the University of Ottawa Eye Institute.
DUTIES INCLUDE:
- Deal compassionately with children diagnosed with ophthalmologic conditions and their families.- Quantification of visual function- Qualification and quantification of ocular misalignment (strabismus) and related sensory anomalies-
- Implementation and monitoring of non-surgical treatment of binocular vision, ocular motility and related disorders of vision- Recommendations for the enhancements and/or restoration of patient’s binocular vision, ocular motility and related disorders of vision.- Consult with the referring ophthalmologist regarding findings and treatment.- Conduct follow-up appointments for treatments independently.- Identify real and potential problems and respond to emergencies by intervening directly or referring to other health care professionals.- Extensive teaching of families and other health care professionals.- Participation in all clinic activities.- Participation in research.- Patient and family education in clinic and over the telephone- Patient advocacy and education.- Support, mentor and teach members of the health care team, including students.- Continuous learning to develop expertise in the specialty.
QUALIFICATIONS- Vulnerable Sector Check (Essential)- Current registration with the Canadian Orthoptic Council or American Orthoptic Society (Essential)- Membership with the Canadian Orthoptic Society (Essential)- Bilingualism (French and English) (preferred)- Minimum two years Pediatric experience (preferred)- Excellent interpersonal skills (Essential)- Strong teaching skills (Essential)- Demonstrated skills in provision of family-centred care (Essential)- Demonstrated professionalism and interest in self development (Essential)- Knowledge of ophthalmic technology (preferred)

Le ou la titulaire doit travailler en autonomie et au sein de l’équipe d’ophthalmologie en fournissant des soins axés sur la famille et fondés sur des données probantes.
Le ou la titulaire assumera des responsabilités à CHEO et à l’Institut de l’œil de l’Université d’Ottawa.
