RESEARCH ASSISTANT, Part Time, $21.00/hourly
The T.A.R.R. Centre of Manitoba is currently seeking a Researcher for our Winnipeg Research office (hybrid work arrangement available).
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under direction of the Research Co-Directors, the Research Assistant is responsible for undertaking preliminary research for projects relating to Specific Land Claims. The incumbent’s main duty will be to assist the lead researcher by reviewing and summarizing primary sources.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assist in research projects
2. Compile preliminary research (e.g., search through and summarize specific Reserve/Band information in digitized Annual Indian Affairs Reports)
3. Review of relevant files and documents (paper, microfilm reels, online, internal database)
4. Create documents (i.e., converting jpeg’s to pdf’s)
5. Transcribes handwritten documents.
6. Assist with additional tasks as needed (e.g., prepare documents for community requests)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Current student (or recent graduate) in Bachelor of Arts in History, Indigenous Studies or related discipline, or equivalent education and experience.
- Experience and knowledge using primary sources
- Experience using multiple forms of historical resource databases.
- Experience conducting document management activities with paper and electronic documents.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and engagement with Indigenous communities.
- Lived experience and/or knowledge of indigenous ways of knowing, thinking, and being.
- Capable of working independently and with mínimal supervision.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office Professional and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
- Ability to work effectively in a team atmosphere.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience conducting Indigenous history research, including records research and online research.
- Experience requesting historical information from archival sources such as Library and Archives Canada, Manitoba Archives, etc.
