St. John's Anglican Church and Cemetery have been a part of Halifax for nearly 200 years, since 1839. We are honored to be the resting place of the sixth Prime Minister of Canada, Confederation Signatories, many victims of the 1917 Halifax Explosion, hundreds of our nations servicemen and women, as well as thousands of our fellow Haligonians.

Job Summary:
The duties and responsibilities of this position are performed for the purpose of supporting directly or indirectly, the Parish mission, prevailing ministry plan, and the effective and efficient operation of the Parish Cemetery.

The Cemetery ground assistant is a member of the Parish ministry team with the Rector, Parish Council, Cemetery Grounds Superintendent, committees, and other groups and persons working in Parish ministries, either paid or unpaid or volunteer.

The Cemetery Grounds Assistant is responsible to assist the Cemetery Grounds Superintendent in the performance of all tasks in the day-to-day maintenance of the cemetery, preparation for interment of remains, administrative needs and all aspects of keeping the Cemetery and Church grounds safe and in a good neat and fashionable state.

Qualifications:

- Excellent Interpersonal and English communication skills.
- Excellent public relation skills, especially when dealing with the general public, parishioners, grieving people, funeral home personnel, monument company personnel, engaged service providers and contractors, and clergy persons.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Attention to detail and accuracy in completing tasks
- Ability to take direction, and work well under supervision.
- Ability to do heavy lifting and strenuous work, and to walk on rough terrain.
- Have a reliable mode of transportation to and from home and work sites.

**Skills**:

- Skill with and ability to operate various power equipment, grounds vehicles, and a vehicle with a towed trailer.
- Knowledge of and proven skills in modern cemetery policies and practices and record keeping technology.
- Knowledge of and proven skills in modern cemetery and grounds maintenance, equipment and materials.

**Job Type**: Seasonal
Contract length: 26 weeks

**Salary**: $20.00-$23.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week

Flexible Language Requirement:

- French not required

Schedule:

- 8 hour shift
- Day shift
- Monday to Friday
- Weekends as needed
