**Title**: _Youth Peer Support Worker_

**Summary**

The Victoria Youth Clinic Society, lead agency for Foundry Victoria is seeking four (4) part-time Youth Peer Support Workers for 22.5 hours/3 days a week.

In accordance with a client and family centered model of care and, in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values and strategic directions of the Victoria Youth Clinic Society and Foundry, this position promotes a safe, respectful, and civil working environment for clients, families, visitors and staff.

Foundry Victoria is an integrated youth and young adult service delivery model comprising primary health, mental health, substance use, social services and peer support, serving youth aged 12 - 24 years old. The Youth Peer Support Worker (YPSW) participates as a member of the Foundry Victoria team.

Drawing on their own lived experience of mental health and/or substance use challenges, the Youth Peer Support Worker plays an integral role in connecting with young people who are accessing services at Foundry Victoria. The YPSW offers peer-based mentoring and emotional support and works collaboratively with youth, their families, and members of the care team. This position assists with the delivery of drop-in services and offers support both on a one-on-one basis and in a group setting. This position includes the facilitation of youth engagement initiatives, specifically the Youth Action Team. The YPSW worker acts as an advocate and role model, helping young people and their families recognize that with hope, recovery is possible.

The Youth Peer Support Worker reports to the Peer Support Lead.

**Qualifications**

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

**Education and Experience**

Grade 12 plus related experience working with youth and young adults with mental health and/or substance use issues or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience; and

Lived experience of mental illness and/or substance use, completion of or eligible for completion of a recognized youth peer support training program and willing to self-identify and share experience of recovery.

**Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities**
- Plays a key role in ensuring that the clinic offers a safe, welcoming, inclusive and youth-friendly environment;
- Establishes a purposeful relationship with young people and supports their engagement and participation in services;
- Provides support, guidance and mentorship for youth and their families, and assists in sharing information on resources and service navigation;
- Assists youth with the activities of daily living including: time management, organization, and interpersonal communication;
- Leads or co-facilitates group services to promote wellness;
- Co-facilitates the Foundry Victoria’s Youth Action Committee;
- Assists with planning, coordinating and/or participating in recreation and social activities;
- Facilitates youth engagement and participation in focus groups, workshops, surveys and related activities;
- Works collaboratively with team members to build relationships with youth and to support their goals;
- Completes and maintains related records and documentation;
- Participates in team meetings, case conferences, and organizational initiatives;
- Well-developed communication skills and good active listening skills, is empathetic and compassionate;
- Demonstrated ability to observe and recognize changes in youth, and communicate those changes to others on the care team;
- Knowledge of systemic issues and risk factors facing minority groups including LGBTQ2S+ and Indigenous youth and young adults;
- Openness to work through conflicts and ability to handle conflict resolution and crisis intervention;
- Ability to have conversations about boundaries and confidentiality;
- Able to promote positive change, self-sufficiency, and independence;
- Broad knowledge of social, mental health, and substance use services available in the community;
- Demonstrated problem solving and decision-making skills; ability to gather and process information to support the organization and its team;
- Able to participate and complete youth peer support training program and other related courses;
- Demonstrated organizational and time management skills, accountability, reliability and punctuality;
- Ability to work independently and show initiative, as well as be part of an interdisciplinary team;
- Basic computer skills (experience using Microsoft Windows 10, Microsoft Office Suite/365 (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams), Internet browsers (Chrome, Firefox) etc.);
**Other Job Requirements**
- Must be able to work flexible hours (some evenings and weekends) to accommodate the needs of the youth we serve.
- A clear criminal record from the Justice Institute of BC for working with vulnerable children and adults is required.
